Chapter 84 - Safehouse Zero: Berlin Under Siege

The Gulfstream did not make it to Moscow.
With both engines aflame and hydraulic fluid spraying from ruptured starboard lines following a near-miss detonation of an interceptor missile, Claire’s pilot had performed a miracle of combat aviation, crash-landing the gutted airframe into an abandoned Cold War runway on the outskirts of Brandenburg, Germany. The pilot had succumbed to internal injuries twenty minutes after touchdown, his hand still gripping the fire suppression handles.
Now, thirty-six hours later, Claire and Julian were buried in the labyrinthine underbelly of Berlin, inside a forgotten Stasi listening bunker thirty feet below the cobblestone streets of Kreuzberg.
Water dripped rhythmically from rusted iron conduits onto the cracked concrete floor. A single hanging incandescent bulb illuminated a scarred wooden workbench piled with counterfeit European passports, bundles of untraceable Swiss Francs, and an array of customized Kalashnikov rifles.
Standing across the table was a grizzled, one-eyed Hungarian named Kovacs, an ex-foreign legionnaire and former logistics handler for Claire during her black-budget operations in the Balkans.
"You should have stayed dead, little sparrow," Kovacs growled, sliding a battered metal mug of strong black tea toward Claire. "The moment your father’s transponder came alive in the Urals, half the intelligence services in Western Europe went into blind panic. The Americans think you've gone rogue. The Germans think you're a terrorist hit-squad. And Arthur Montgomery's Cerberus dogs are hunting every safehouse from here to Warsaw."
"I don't care what Western Europe thinks, Kovacs," Claire said, ignoring the tea. She pulled a high-density drive from her tactical harness and slammed it onto the table. "I need entry into the Russian Federation through the Belarusian exclusion zone. Silent. No customs, no satellites, no electronic footprints."
Kovacs let out a bitter, wheezing laugh. "Entry? Into Yamantau? You’re asking for a ticket to hell, Claire. Do you even know what your father has down there?"
Julian, shivering in an oversized wool trench coat, stepped out of the shadows. "What does he have?"
Kovacs turned his single, cloudy eye toward Julian, sneering. "The boy who pushed papers for the wicked witch. You look like a ghost already, boy." Kovacs looked back at Claire, his expression turning gravely solemn. "It’s called the Ares Protocol. In the nineties, the Soviet Union built an automated perimeter retaliatory system—Dead Hand. Arthur didn't just build an army down there; he bought the launch keys to the dormant tactical silos along the Ural fault line. He isn't planning a coup, Claire. He’s planning a global reset."
Before Claire could answer, the single overhead light bulb flickered twice, then died, plunging the bunker into absolute darkness.
The rhythmic drip of the water pipe was suddenly eclipsed by the sound of muffled footsteps on the metal staircase leading down from the street-level trapdoor.
"Thermal breach," Claire hissed, grabbing Kovacs by the shoulder and shoving him behind the heavy steel tool cabinet. "Julian, behind the blast door! Now!"
*BOOM.*
The bunker’s reinforced steel door was blown inward by a linear shaped charge, filling the subterranean room with concussive shockwaves and blinding white magnesium light. Flashbangs.
Claire closed her eyes a microsecond before detonation, retaining her night vision. Through the swirling dust and smoke, she saw the silhouette of three heavily armored breachers sweeping the room with thermal-scoped suppressed submachine guns.
She didn't wait. Drawing her customized combat knife in her left hand and a suppressed Makarov pistol in her right, Claire charged straight through the lingering smoke.
She met the lead breacher as he crossed the threshold. She deflected his barrel with her pistol hand, drove her blade into the soft gap between his helmet and shoulder armor, and twisted. He collapsed with a choked gasp.
The second operator swung his muzzle toward her, but Claire seized the dying man's tactical webbing, using his heavy corpse as a human shield. A burst of 9mm hollow points hammered into the dead mercenary's back plates. In the strobe-lit chaos, Claire extended her arm over the dead man’s shoulder and fired three rounds into the second breacher’s chest, dropping him instantly.
"Claire! Behind you!" Julian screamed from the shadows.

A third mercenary lunged from the stairwell, tackling Claire to the concrete floor. Her pistol clattered away into the dark.
