Chapter 50 - The Dead Man’s Trigger

A heavy, mechanical thud reverberated through the hull of the entire eight-hundred-foot vessel.

On the forward flight deck, two massive hydraulic steel doors split open, sliding into the ship's superstructure. Rising from the steaming depths of the lower missile bay were four hypersonic cruise missile launch canisters, their hydraulic stabilizers locking into vertical launch position with a deafening series of metallic clangs.

Above them, the digital missile launch displays on the bridge lit up in blinding crimson:

*TARGET LOCK ACQUIRED: SECTOR 1 (NORFOLK NAVAL BASE), SECTOR 2 (WASHINGTON D.C.), SECTOR 3 (NEW YORK HARBOR).*

*PAYLOAD: ADVANCED NEURAL THERMOBARIC WARHEADS.*

*LAUNCH SEQUENCE: T-MINUS 180 SECONDS.*

"You're insane," Claire breathed, her blood running cold as she realized the apocalyptic scale of Shaw’s endgame. "You’re going to decapitate the United States eastern seaboard."

"And the world will watch the launch originate from an unmarked vessel registered to Julian Vance's private intelligence network—authenticated using the personal security credentials of Captain Claire Walker, the rogue terrorist who attacked the National Cathedral," Shaw said, his voice dripping with triumphant venom. "You won't just die here, Claire. History will remember you as the monster who burned the Republic to the ground."

Claire didn't waste another syllable.

She fired.

The heavy .45 round punched through Shaw’s right shoulder, spinning him around and slamming him into the steel window frame. The scotch glass shattered on the floor.

Shaw screamed in agony, but his bloody left hand slapped down onto a small, red console wired directly into his tactical vest.

A high-pitched tone sounded: *MANUAL OVERRIDE LOCKED. DEAD-MAN PROTOCOL INITIATED.*

"Shoot me again, Captain!" Shaw roared, blood bubbling up his throat as he laughed hysterically. "Kill me, and the timer cuts from three minutes to zero! The missiles launch automatically upon my heart stopping!"

Claire surged forward, catching Shaw by the throat with one hand and pressing the barrel of her pistol under his chin, holding him against the glass.

"Deactivate the sequence!" Claire roared, her knuckles digging into his windpipe. "Deactivate it now!"

"There is... no deactivation code..." Shaw choked out through a bloody grin. "The storm is here, One-Eighty-Seven. You can't shoot your way out of this one."

Down on the flight deck, the first hypersonic rocket booster began venting white nitrogen gas, the ignition turbines spinning up with an ear-splitting, supersonic whine that shook the entire ship down to its keel.

Suddenly, Claire’s tactical comms earpiece crackled with static.

It wasn't Marcus. It wasn't Jax.

It was Ethan’s voice—coming through a scrambled, emergency priority channel from Washington D.C., his words broken by static and the sound of deafening gunfire in the background.

*"Claire! Claire, do you read me?!"* Ethan screamed into the radio, panic tearing through his voice. *"Marcus's safehouse was compromised! They didn't just want the launch, Claire! A secondary kill team breached the Czech embassy perimeter ten minutes ago! They broke through the bunker doors! Claire... they took Maya! They took my baby girl!"*

Claire stood frozen on the bridge of the warship, surrounded by the raging Arctic storm.

Behind her, the hypersonic launch timer counted down: *02:15... 02:14... 02:13...*

In her hands, the dying mastermind who held the launch codes laughed through his blood.

And over her radio, Maya’s terrified, fading voice shrieked: *"Auntie Claire! Help me!"*

Claire looked at the launch screens targeting millions of innocent lives.

She listened to the radio carrying the screams of the only family she had left on earth.

And for the first time in her life, the One-Eighty-Seven stood on the edge of the absolute abyss.
