Chapter 77 - The Broken Puppet

The silence that followed Claire's revelation was heavier than the storm howling outside.

Julian slowly turned his head to look down at Margaret, who was crawling backward on her hands and knees toward the master suite.

"Is this true?" Julian whispered.

Margaret slammed her hand down on an emergency console concealed beneath the antique baseboard.

"Protocol Tartarus! Authorization Alpha-Seven-Niner!" she screamed into the intercom.

Instantly, a piercing, high-frequency sonic blast erupted from the hidden speakers in the ceiling.

Julian roared in agony, dropping his heavy carbine as his hands flew to his ears. The neural implants along his spine flashed with violent blue electrical sparks. His eyes rolled back, blood trickling from his nostrils as the cybernetic overrides seized control of his central nervous system.

"Julian!" Claire yelled, lunging forward.

"He... is... my... property!" Margaret snarled, scrambling to her feet, her terror entirely consumed by venomous hatred. "Arthur was weak! He had the genius to build Boreas, but he lacked the stomach to use it! I commercialized it! I turned my dead husband's pet project into a four-billion-dollar private contract engine!"

Julian’s body convulsed violently. His head snapped up, his gray eyes now completely blank, glowing with a faint, horrifying artificial light.

*“Target acquired: Operator 187. Terminate with extreme prejudice,”* the automated voice echoed through Julian's suit speakers.

Julian pivoted toward Claire. With terrifying, mechanical speed, his armored fist shot out, catching Claire squarely in the chest.

The impact cracked two of her ribs, launching her backward through the air. Claire crashed through the wooden balustrade of the staircase, plummeting fifteen feet down to the marble floor below.

She hit the ground hard, the breath ripped from her lungs in an explosion of white agony. Blood welled in her mouth. She tried to rise, but her vision swam with black spots.

Above her, Julian vaulted over the broken railing, descending like an iron meteor. He landed with a bone-shattering thud, the floor cracking beneath his boots.

"Julian... fight it..." Claire choked out, dragging herself backward along the floor, reaching for her fallen sidearm. "It's the programming... fight it!"

Julian didn't hesitate. He advanced, stepping on her wrist with crushing force, pinning her arm to the floor. The bone groaned under the immense pressure. He drew his combat knife, the six-inch titanium blade glinting in the dim light.

Up on the balcony, Margaret leaned over, a triumphant, psychotic smirk stretching across her face.

"Cut her throat, Julian," Margaret commanded coldly. "Cut her throat, and let's put this miserable chapter to rest."

Julian raised the blade. His mechanical muscles locked into position for the downward thrust.

Claire looked into his eyes—into the blank, dead stare of the brother she had mourned for a decade. She didn't reach for her other weapon. She didn't try to roll away.

Instead, with her free hand, she reached into her jacket pocket, pulled out the tarnished silver pocket watch, and held it up to his face.

The watch swung gently between them. The glass was cracked, but beneath it, the photograph remained clear: twelve-year-old Julian with his arm around six-year-old Claire, smiling under the Virginia sun.

"The hunt is over, Julian," Claire whispered through the blood on her lips. "Three short... two long... one short. Dad called us home."

Julian’s hand froze mid-strike.

The blade trembled.
