Chapter 18 - The Shadow in the Arlington Fog

Two days later.

Arlington National Cemetery was shrouded in a dense, ghostly mist. The endless rows of white marble headstones stretched out across the rolling green hills, standing like silent sentinels under the gray Washington sky.

Claire stood alone at Section 60, Grave 8421.

The grass beneath her boots was damp with morning dew. She had taken off her white service cap, holding it against her side. Her Medal of Honor hung around her neck, gleaming softly against the somber backdrop of the cemetery.

She looked down at the inscription on the stone:

**ETHAN MONTGOMERY**

**FIRST LIEUTENANT, US ARMY**

**BRONZE STAR, PURPLE HEART**

**BELOVED BROTHER**

She had personally paid the stonecutter to remove the word "SON" from the marker the previous afternoon. Margaret was currently sitting in a federal detention center in Alexandria, Virginia, her bail denied, her assets frozen, and her name permanently etched in history as a traitor who traded her own son’s life for defense stock dividends.

"It's over, Ethan," Claire said softly, her voice barely carrying through the fog. "The whole world knows the truth now. You can rest."

She knelt down, placing a small bronze coin—the insignia of Task Force 187—against the cold surface of the marble.

"He won't rest, Captain," a raspy, unfamiliar voice spoke from behind her.

Claire’s combat instincts flared instantly. She was on her feet in half a second, her body coiled, her eyes locking onto the figure emerging from the mist.

A man was walking slowly toward the grave, leaning heavily on a carbon-fiber cane. He wore an old Army fatigue jacket, his hood pulled up against the damp air. His left leg was artificial, clicking softly with every stride, and the left side of his face bore the severe, puckered burn scars of an intense explosion.

Claire squinted through the fog, her pulse quickening. "Who are you? This is a restricted area."

The man stopped five paces away. He slowly pushed back his hood.

Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. Her blood ran cold.

"Sergeant Miller?" she gasped, her voice trembling in absolute disbelief. "Staff Sergeant James Miller? Ethan’s spotter?"

"Reported killed in action four years ago in the Korengal," the man said with a bitter, ghost-like smile. "Buried right over there in Section 58 with an empty casket."
