Chapter 26 - The Unseen Sniper

Ethan’s hand wavered. The iron resolve in his eyes flickered, cracked, and began to splinter under the sheer weight of Claire’s unyielding love. The hammer of the M1911 stayed cocked, but the barrel drifted an inch away from Margaret’s skull.

"Claire..." Ethan breathed, the ghost of the boy she remembered finally breaking through the armor of the assassin. "They turned me into a monster. There’s nothing left inside me."

"There's enough," Claire said, reaching out her hand. "Lower the weapon, Ethan. We take her to the Capitol. We lay the black files before the Senate Armed Services Committee. We burn their empire down legally, in the broad daylight, where they cannot hide."

For a split second, it seemed the nightmare was over. Ethan let out a long, ragged exhale, his shoulders dropping.

Then, Claire’s tactical instincts—honed by hundreds of hours in sniper hides—screamed an alarm.

A millimeter of red light danced across the wet concrete.

*Laser designator.*

It wasn't coming from the circling Black Hawk. It wasn't coming from Ethan’s perimeter team. It was originating from the dense tree line on the mountain ridge eight hundred yards to the north—an extreme-range precision rifle team that didn't belong to the federal marshals.

"SNIPER! DOWN!" Claire screamed, lunging forward with explosive power.

*CRACK.*

The supersonic snap of a high-caliber anti-material round split the thunder.

The heavy bullet did not hit Ethan. It did not hit Margaret.

It struck Ethan’s second-in-command, the operator guarding the eastern perimeter, punching through his ceramic chest plate and throwing him backward off the rooftop into the abyss below.

*CRACK. CRACK.*

Two more rounds tore into the helipad, shattering the concrete into lethal shrapnel.

"They're sanitizing the site!" Ethan roared, his tactical training instantly overriding his grief. He shoved Margaret down behind the low concrete lip of the elevator housing, raising his carbine to return fire into the dark tree line. "It’s Black Mountain! They’re not here to arrest us—they’re here to wipe the slate clean!"

From the dark forest surrounding the prison base, the roar of multiple twin-engine attack helicopters—unmarked, running completely dark without navigation lights—rose into the sky like predatory bats.

The Pentagon wasn't waiting for a trial. The shadow syndicate that financed Margaret Montgomery had dispatched their private cleanup crew to erase every living witness on that roof: the mother, the son, and the daughter who held the truth.
