Chapter 38 - The Living and the Dead

The cabin of the Black Hawk was warm, lit by the soft red tactical lamps glowing overhead. The deafening roar of the rotors outside faded into a steady, protective thrum as the helicopter flew south toward Washington, leaving the burning wreckage of the Vance conspiracy far behind.

Ethan Walker lay on the stretcher, the IV lines taping down his bruised arms, his face sunken, scarred, and pale. But for the first time in four years, his eyes were clear.

He looked across the cabin floor.

Claire was kneeling beside the stretcher, holding Maya’s small hand in hers.

"Ethan," Claire whispered, her voice choking with an emotion so deep it threatened to break her iron composure. "Someone wants to meet you."

Ethan’s breathing hitched. His hollow chest rose and fell rapidly as his gaze shifted from his sister to the little girl standing shyly beside her.

Maya was holding the frayed stuffed rabbit with one hand, her other hand tightly gripping Claire’s fingers. She looked at the bruised, broken man on the litter. She saw the silver dog tag clutched in his trembling fingers—the exact match to the medallion around her neck.

"Daddy?" Maya whispered, the word carrying a fragile, terrifying hope that silenced the entire cabin.

A single tear cut through the dried blood and grime on Ethan’s cheek. He tried to sit up, his muscles screaming in agony, but Marcus gently placed a steadying hand on his shoulder.

"Easy, soldier," Marcus murmured with deep respect. "You're safe now."

Ethan reached out with a trembling hand, his fingers shaking so hard he could barely keep them raised.

"Maya..." Ethan croaked, his voice raw from years of screaming in Cumberland’s torture chambers, yet filled with a tenderness that defied every horror he had survived. "My little girl... my sweet, beautiful girl..."

Maya didn't hesitate. She broke away from Claire’s grip and threw herself onto the edge of the litter, wrapping her tiny arms around Ethan’s neck.

Ethan pulled his daughter against his chest, burying his face into her hair, his entire body convulsing with deep, shuddering sobs. The phantom of the Korengal, the prisoner of Operation Obsidian, the ghost who was supposed to die in the dark—he was finally a father again.

Claire watched them, her hand resting on the grip of her sidearm, feeling the heavy burden of four long years finally lift from her shoulders.

Beside her, Marcus Vance pulled out the titanium hard drive containing the names of every senator, general, and corporate titan who had profited from Ethan’s fake death.

"What do we do with this, Claire?" Marcus asked quietly. "If this leaks to the press, the entire government will shake to its foundations. Half of Washington will burn."

Claire stood up, looking out the cabin window at the twinkling lights of the Potomac approaching in the distance.

May you like

"Let it burn, Marcus," Claire said, her voice uncompromising. "Ethan bled for four years so they could get rich. The world is going to see every single name. Every single dollar. We finish this."
