Chapter 16 - You Chose the Check Over His Life

Claire was standing by the window. She had already changed into her pristine service dress uniform, the light blue ribbon of the Medal of Honor resting around her neck.
She didn't jump. She didn't even turn around immediately. She simply watched the runway outside, where Air Force Two was taxiing toward the terminal to fly her to Washington, D.C.
"Get your coat," Margaret continued, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her. She opened her designer leather tote bag and pulled out a thick document. "My legal team has prepared a joint statement. You will tell the press that last night was an emotional misunderstanding resulting from combat trauma. You will state that our family has always stood together in honoring Ethan’s memory."
Margaret dropped the papers onto the desk. Beside them, she placed a cashier's check.
Claire finally turned around. Her eyes drifted to the check.
*Pay to the order of: Claire Montgomery.*
*Amount: $10,000,000.00.*
"Ten million dollars," Margaret said, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial purr. "Clean. Untaxable through a family trust. You never have to fly another helicopter. You never have to answer to another commander. You can buy whatever estate you want in Montana or Virginia. All you have to do is walk out to that tarmac with me, put your arm around my shoulders, and tell the cameras that your mother was the inspiration behind your courage."
Claire stared at her mother. For the first time in her life, she didn't see an imposing matriarch. She didn't see the woman who had made her feel worthless at family dinners, who had discarded her achievements like trash while worshipping Ethan’s memory.
She saw an empty, pathetic husk of a human being.
"You really don't know, do you?" Claire asked, her voice dangerously quiet.
"Know what?" Margaret snapped impatiently, tapping her diamond-clad finger against her watch. "We don't have time for your theatrics, Claire! The market opens in two hours! My life’s work is on the line!"
"Ethan’s life was on the line," Claire said, taking a slow, measured step forward.
Margaret blinked, caught off guard. "What does Ethan have to do with this? Ethan is dead! He sacrificed himself for this country!"
"Ethan didn't sacrifice himself, Margaret," Claire said, each word landing like a hammer strike. "You murdered him."
The room went dead silent. The color drained from Margaret’s face until her red lipstick looked like a gash of fresh blood across chalk.
"How dare you..." Margaret stammered, stepping back. "How dare you speak his name to me like that! I gave Ethan everything! He was my golden son!"
"You gave him defective radios," Claire said, pulling the unredacted files from the desk drawer and slamming them down on top of the ten-million-dollar check. "Operation Obsidian. Serial Number MDS-7704. Defective heat sinks. You signed the delivery waiver on October 14th to hit your quarterly bonus. Three weeks later, Ethan took those units into the Korengal."
Margaret’s eyes darted wildly across the technical schematics and the signature block at the bottom of the DOD procurement document. Her signature—sharp, elegant, unmistakably hers—was stamped in blue ink.
"That's... that's corporate paperwork," Margaret whispered, her voice trembling violently. "I sign hundreds of documents a week... I couldn't have known..."

"He called for you, Margaret," Claire whispered, her voice breaking with raw, devastating pain. "We recovered the audio thirty minutes ago."
