Chapter 30 - The Fortress in the Sky

Dawn broke over Manhattan, but it brought no warmth.
A thick, slate-gray fog rolled off the Hudson River, wrapping the gleaming glass spires of the city in a shroud of cold iron. At the pinnacle of the Montgomery Tower—an ultra-modern, seventy-story monolith of black glass overlooking Central Park—the private penthouse stood dead, silent, and heavily fortified.
Down on the streets, the world was erupting.
Every news network on the planet was running the Cumberland footage on a continuous loop. Protests were igniting outside the United Nations and the Pentagon. The White House press briefing room was a riot of screaming journalists demanding to know why Director of National Intelligence Julian Vance had vanished from public view at four in the morning.
Inside the Black Hawk, circling low beneath the cloud ceiling over Queens, the combat medic pulled his defibrillator paddles back from Ethan’s bare chest.
*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP.*
A steady, fragile rhythm returned to the heart monitor.
"He’s stabilized, Captain," the medic breathed, wiping sweat from his forehead. "We managed to clamp the internal hemorrhage, but he’s in a deep coma. He needs a surgical theater within two hours or systemic shock will take him."
Claire nodded once, her face set like stone. She checked her tactical watch: *0615 Hours.*
She turned to Margaret, who sat huddled on the troop bench across from her. The billionaire matriarch looked like a hollowed-out corpse. The pride, the vanity, the untouchable arrogance that had defined her entire life had been completely stripped away, leaving only the naked, shivering terror of a woman whose sins had finally caught up with her.
"The penthouse safe," Claire commanded. "What is the override sequence?"
Margaret swallowed hard, her voice trembling. "It’s... it's a retinal scan linked directly to me, combined with a twenty-four-character biometric alphanumeric key. But Claire... you don't understand what you're walking into."
Claire narrowed her eyes. "Explain."
"Julian Vance knew Cumberland might fail," Margaret whispered, her eyes wide with dread. "If he lost control of Ethan, his only move was to retrieve the physical ledger before the FBI could execute a search warrant. He’s not running. He’s already inside the penthouse. He has his entire personal security detail—twenty former Special Activities Center operators—holding that floor."
Margaret leaned forward, her voice dropping to a desperate hiss.
"And Julian doesn't just have the ledger, Claire. When he breached the penthouse an hour ago... he took hostages. He knew you would come for that safe."
Claire felt a cold fist tighten around her spine. "Who is in that penthouse, Margaret?"
Margaret looked down at her blood-stained hands, unable to meet Claire's gaze.
"Your father's sister... Aunt Evelyn... and your seven-year-old niece, Maya. Ethan's daughter. The daughter Ethan never even knew he had."
Claire froze.
The entire cabin of the helicopter went dead, terrifyingly silent. Master Sergeant Marcus Vance stopped loading his magazine, his eyes locking onto Claire in sheer disbelief.
*Ethan had a daughter.*
The brother who had been tortured for four years in a black site, the brother fighting for his life on the litter beside her, had a child hidden away in Manhattan—a child now held at gunpoint by the Director of National Intelligence.
Claire slowly stood up. She walked to the open door of the Black Hawk, looking out at the black glass tower piercing the storm clouds over Manhattan. Her hand rested on the grip of her sidearm, her knuckles turning bone-white.
"Marcus," Claire said, her voice dropping into a chilling, absolute stillness that signaled the complete unleashing of the One-Eighty-Seven.
"Yes, Ma'am?"
"Tell the pilot to drop us directly onto the penthouse skylight."
May you like
Claire chambered a round into her rifle, the click echoing through the cabin like a death knell.
"And tell him not to look away. Because in five minutes... there won't be a single man left standing on that floor."
