Chapter 52 - The Coldest Sacrifice

The heat hit Claire like a solid wall of iron.

As the booster engine fired, a blinding geyser of white-hot flame roared up through the exhaust conduits. The ambient temperature on the foredeck spiked from below freezing to over eight hundred degrees in a fraction of a second. The synthetic fabric of Claire’s combat rig began to smoke, the skin of her hands blistering through her tactical gloves.

Clinging to the manual override lever of the silo’s safety clamp, Claire threw her entire body weight backward. The emergency lever was designed to physically lock the missile in the tube if an engine malfunctioned on the pad.

Her muscles tore under the strain. Her teeth gritted so hard enamel cracked.

“Break, damn you!” she screamed into the roaring inferno.

With a bone-jarring snap, the mechanical clamp engaged, biting into the fuselage of the missile. At the exact same second, the cable from Marcus’s circling helicopter sliced down through the sleet, hooking onto the silo’s reinforced blast shield.

“Marcus! Pull! Maximum torque!” Claire roared over the comms.

The transport helicopter groaned under the immense strain, its rotors screaming as the pilot hauled back on the collective. The combined mechanical force sheared the guidance stabilizer fins right off the missile’s tail section.

With its fins shattered and its manual clamps engaged, the missile’s onboard navigation computer registered a catastrophic structural failure. The emergency safety protocol activated: the fuel pumps cut off, and the blinding column of flame died into a thick, choking cloud of black smoke and venting nitrogen.

The hypersonic launch was dead. Millions of innocent civilians across Europe would wake up tomorrow morning completely unaware that their world had almost ended at three in the morning.

Claire collapsed onto the scorched steel deck, coughing up soot and blood. The freezing Arctic rain immediately washed over her burns, sending searing waves of agony through her nervous system. But she didn't lie there for more than two seconds.

She pushed herself up onto her knees, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.

She reached up and pressed her earpiece. “Ethan. Report.”

Silence answered her. Nothing but the crackle of a distant signal repeater.

Then, a trembling, broken voice broke through the channel. It wasn’t Ethan. It was General Vance, calling directly from the underground command post at the Pentagon.

*“Claire… this is Vance. Stand down and listen to me very carefully.”*

“Where is my niece, General?” Claire’s voice was dangerously low, a subterranean growl that made the four-star general pause on the other end of the line.

*“Ethan is currently in transit to Walter Reed. He took a ricochet to the skull during the ambush. Jax is in emergency surgery—he’s in critical condition. The strike team that took Maya… they didn't leave through the city. They used an unmarked black helicopter with transponders matching the Joint Special Operations Command.”*

Claire climbed to her feet, walking through the smoking ruins of the missile deck toward the bridge where Shaw was still strapped to the helm. “Are you telling me this was an inside job sanctioned by our own government?”

*“Not the government,”* Vance replied, his tone heavy with dread. *“A rogue cell within the intelligence apparatus. A cabal that your mother, Margaret Sterling, helped fund through her shell accounts over the last fifteen years. They know the evidence you uncovered at the Arlington vault will destroy them all. Maya is their leverage. They aren’t asking for money, Claire. They’re asking for you.”*

Claire reached the bridge. She grabbed the unconscious Shaw by his hair, jerking his head back. She didn't check his pulse. She didn't care anymore.

“Where did they take her?” Claire demanded into the radio.

*“A private airfield outside Richmond. But you can’t get there in time, Claire. You’re in the middle of the North Atlantic. Even with our fastest interceptor jet, it will take you four hours. By then—”*

“They have three hours before they realize Shaw failed,” Claire interrupted, her tone devoid of all human emotion. “Marcus! Bring the bird down. Refuel at the Icelandic forward base. Clear my airspace all the way to the Virginia coastline.”

*“Claire,”* Vance’s voice shook. *“If you cross back into domestic airspace armed with black-budget combat gear, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Homeland Security will treat you as a hostile insurgent. They’ve already issued a shoot-on-sight directive under the authority of the Homeland Defense Council.”*

Claire stared out through the shattered windows into the violent Atlantic waves.

“Let them come,” Claire whispered. “Tell them the One-Eighty-Seven is coming home.”
