Chapter 6 - The Unholy Alliance

Seventy-two hours after the catastrophe at L'Hiver, the Vance Capital headquarters on Park Avenue looked like a war zone.

Federal agents in windbreakers carrying blue plastic storage bins filed in and out of the glass towers, carrying hard drives, server towers, and mountains of confidential documents. On the pavement outside, media satellite vans lined the curb, reporters shouting live updates into cameras under the glare of harsh studio lights.

Up on the forty-fourth floor, inside Daniel’s corner office, Sophia stood looking out over the Manhattan skyline.

She wore a tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, her hair pulled back into an elegant chignon. Her bruises were concealed by artfully applied foundation, but the cold, steady authority in her posture couldn't be hidden by any makeup.

The double doors opened. Vanessa walked in, carrying two take-out coffees and an envelope sealed with red wax.

"The board just voted unanimously," Vanessa said, handing Sophia a coffee. "My father officially accepted your restructuring proposal. Vance Capital's remaining assets are being absorbed into Sterling Logistics. We saved over four hundred jobs that Daniel was planning to liquidate."

Sophia took the coffee, feeling a quiet sense of triumph settle into her bones. "And your father? How is he handling the truth?"

Vanessa took a deep breath, looking down at the plush Persian rug beneath her feet. "He was devastated at first. He blamed himself for bringing Daniel into our inner circle. But when I showed him the offshore transfers—when I showed him that you and I dismantled Daniel’s entire trap before he could strike—he looked at me differently."

Vanessa looked up at Sophia, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. "He always treated me like a fragile princess who couldn't balance a checkbook. For the first time in my life, my father looked at me like a partner. He named me Executive Vice President of Logistics this morning."

"You earned it, Vanessa," Sophia said honestly. "Without your encryption keys, the federal government would have tied that money up in probate court for the next ten years. You didn't just save your family. You saved mine."

Vanessa laughed softly, a bittersweet sound. "Three days ago, I was ready to hate you forever. I thought you were the bitter, cold wife standing in the way of my fairytale."

"Daniel was very good at telling fairy tales," Sophia said, her gaze drifting toward the empty desk where her husband had ruled like an emperor. "He told me I was his queen while he measured me for a coffin. He told you that you were his muse while he drafted the bankruptcy papers for your father."

"Speaking of coffins," Vanessa said, holding up the red-wax envelope. "This just arrived from the District Attorney’s office. The formal indictment was approved by the grand jury an hour ago."

Sophia took the envelope and broke the wax seal. She skimmed the legal documents, her eyes lingering on the names of the charges:

*United States of America v. Daniel Thomas Vance.*

*Count 1: Attempted Murder in the First Degree.*

*Count 2: Conspiracy to Commit Murder.*

*Count 3: Aggravated Domestic Assault.*

*Count 4: Grand Larceny in the First Degree.*

*Count 5: Securities Fraud...*

"They're seeking the maximum sentence," Sophia noted, her voice steady. "Life without the possibility of parole."

"Arthur Cross told the prosecutor that Daniel wants a plea deal," Vanessa said, leaning against the mahogany desk. "He’s offering to confess to everything if they drop the attempted murder charges and let him serve his time in a minimum-security federal camp in upstate New York."

Sophia slowly folded the document and slid it back into the envelope. Her eyes turned to steel.

"No plea deal."

"Sophia, if he goes to trial, the defense will try to drag you through the mud," Vanessa warned, concern creeping into her voice. "They’ll bring up your miscarriages, your depression, your father’s estate... they will try to paint you as a paranoid, vengeful spouse who drove him to the brink."

Sophia turned back toward the window, looking down at the reporters swarming like ants on the street below.

"Let them try," Sophia whispered. "Daniel Vance took seven years of my life. He kicked me while I lay bleeding on a restaurant floor. He tried to poison my body and steal my soul."

She looked at Vanessa with a terrifying, unyielding clarity.

"I don't want him in a country-club prison playing tennis with corrupt politicians, Vanessa. I want him in a maximum-security penitentiary. I want him to spend the next forty years staring at a gray concrete wall, remembering the exact moment he decided to kick his wife to save his mistress."
