Chapter 28 - The Architect’s Lair

The refrigeration depot on Pier 42 was an icy labyrinth of hanging plastic curtains, rusted ammonia pipes, and towering metal storage racks. The temperature inside hovered near freezing, every breath blooming in white clouds of frost.

In the center of the vast, hollow warehouse, illuminated by harsh work lights, sat Arthur Vance.

The once-untouchable corporate titan was zip-tied to a steel chair, his expensive bespoke suit torn to shreds, his face battered and bloodied. Suspended from an overhead hook above him hung an automated medical dialysis machine, drawing blood from his arm through plastic tubing and filtering it through a glowing, refrigerated centrifuge.

Standing beside the console was Victoria Vance, dressed in a sleek charcoal coat, checking the digital progress of the enzyme separation.

"Look at you, Uncle Arthur," Victoria murmured, her voice echoing off the corrugated steel walls. "The great spider of Wall Street. Reduced to twenty liters of raw biological matter."

Arthur coughed, spitting blood onto the concrete floor. "You’re a monster... just like your mother was."

"My mother was a genius whom you and my father drove to suicide!" Victoria snarled, striking him across the face with the heavy barrel of her pistol. "You stole her work, patented her compounds, and built Vance-Sterling Logistics on her corpse!"

The heavy steel door at the far end of the warehouse creaked open.

Victoria spun around, her weapon raised.

Out of the shadows emerged Sophia.

She walked slowly, leaning heavily on a metal cane, her breathing shallow and ragged. Dr. Hayes’s emergency IV line was still taped to the back of her hand, trailing a half-empty bag of saline tucked into her coat pocket. She was completely alone.

Victoria’s lips curved into a triumphant, predatory smile. "Well, well. Look what dragged itself out of the hospital."

"Let Arthur go, Victoria," Sophia said, her voice shaking with forced exhaustion. "He’s broken. The empire is gone. The FBI has seized every vessel in the fleet."

"I don't need the fleet anymore, Little Sister," Victoria laughed, pointing toward the centrifuge unit where a glass vial was slowly filling with clear, luminescent fluid. "Once this centrifuge completes the extraction, I hold the global patent rights to the most advanced synthetic neuro-toxin in modern history. Foreign governments will pay billions for the weapon. And you... you get to be the final clinical demonstration."

"You really hate me that much?" Sophia asked, taking two trembling steps closer. "For a childhood you didn't get to have?"

"I hate everything you represent!" Victoria screamed, her poise completely shattering as she advanced on Sophia, pressing the cold muzzle of the gun directly between Sophia’s eyes. "You lived in the light while I was locked in the dark! You had Father’s love, Daniel’s devotion, the world's respect!"

"Daniel never loved me," Sophia whispered, looking past the gun barrel into her sister’s unhinged eyes. "And you forgot one fundamental rule about our family, Victoria."

Victoria’s finger tightened on the trigger. "What rule?"

May you like

"We never walk into an ambush without holding the detonator."
