Chapter 27 - The Judas Protocol

The morning sun rose through a thick blanket of gray smog over the Port of Bayonne.
Forty-two hours remained.
Sophia lay propped up in the back of the mobile command trailer, an array of cardiac monitors beeping in a tense, rhythmic cadence. The atropine had stabilized her rhythm temporarily, but Dr. Hayes’s face told the brutal truth: her body was running on borrowed time. Her skin was translucent, dark purple bruises forming under her eyes and across her knuckles where the synthetic toxin attacked her vascular lining.
"We ran the journal’s serial numbers," Miller reported, slamming the command door shut. "Sophia was right. Victoria never planned to meet Arthur at the federal courthouse. While we were preparing security protocols in Manhattan, Victoria’s private contractors moved an industrial bio-synthesis unit into an abandoned refrigeration depot on Pier 42."
"And Arthur?" Vanessa asked, wrapping a fresh layer of medical tape around her grazed forearm from the penthouse firefight.
"Arthur’s transport convoy was attacked twenty minutes ago on the FDR Drive," Miller said grimly. "Victoria’s men hit the federal armored car with an RPG. Arthur wasn't rescued—he was abducted."
Sophia pulled the oxygen mask down to her chin, her voice raspy but razor-sharp. "She didn't abduct him for money. She abducted him because Phase Three—the final universal cure—requires a living donor match."
Vanessa turned white. "What?"
"My father and Arthur were brothers," Sophia whispered, piecing together the twisted biological puzzle. "Victoria and I share fifty percent of our DNA through our father. But the organophosphate was synthesized using Arthur’s own genetic marrow line as the locking enzyme—Daniel told me Arthur’s blood was submitted to a private longevity clinic two years ago. Victoria used Arthur’s biological template to create the poison so that only someone with our direct bloodline could hold the key."
"She’s going to harvest Arthur," Dr. Hayes said, sheer disgust curdling his tone. "And once she extracts the enzyme to synthesize her own immunity, she’ll execute him and leave Mrs. Vance to suffocate from respiratory paralysis."
"Not if we hit Pier 42 before she completes the extraction," Miller said, cocking his sidearm. "We have two tactical assault teams ready to breach."
"No heavy sirens," Sophia commanded, struggling to sit up. Vanessa rushed to support her waist. "Victoria has hair-trigger surveillance on the harbor. If she sees standard tactical teams, she blows the refrigeration depot. We go in through the drainage canals beneath the pier."
"Sophia, you can barely stand," Vanessa protested, tears of frustration shining in her eyes. "Let Miller handle the breach!"

"If Victoria sees only federal agents, she destroys the vial out of spite," Sophia said, looking Vanessa straight in the eye. "She needs to see me. She needs to believe she’s won. She’s waited twenty-two years to watch the legitimate daughter beg for her life. That arrogance is the only weapon we have left."
