Chapter 49 - The Masquerade of the Damned

The boardroom of Sterling Consolidated was a cathedral of glass, chrome, and polished teakwood, perched thousands of feet above the swirling gray fog of Manhattan.
Twelve members of the executive board sat around the massive conference table, their faces pale, their eyes fixed on Caroline Sterling, who sat at the head of the table like an empress holding court over a doomed court.
Daniel stood by the panoramic window, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes scanning the grey skies over Central Park.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Caroline said, her voice smooth, melodious, and laced with quiet menace. "Julian's unfortunate passing and the tragic... instability of my daughter Sophia have necessitated a complete consolidation of voting rights. The documents before you transfer executive authority of the Sterling Foundation and its subsidiary holdings to myself and Daniel."
An elderly board member, Arthur Vance, Julian's oldest corporate counsel, raised a trembling hand. "Caroline... the rumors this morning. The ambush on the FDR Drive. The reports of Eleanor being extracted by force. The police are downstairs in the lobby right now!"
"The police are being managed by our legal department, Arthur," Daniel cut in, turning slowly from the window with a condescending smile. "Sign the resolution. Unless, of course, you would like the SEC to review the undeclared trusts your grandchildren hold in the Cayman Islands?"
Arthur’s face turned gray. He picked up his pen with a shaking hand.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding thud.
The room fell into a deathly, suffocating silence.
Sophia walked through the threshold.
She wasn't running. She wasn't hiding. She wore an ink-black tailored pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back severely from her face, her eyes cold, luminous, and terrifyingly clear. Behind her, Marcus Miller stood in the doorway, his federal badge pinned openly to his lapel, his hand resting calmly on the grip of his unholstered sidearm.
"You're late, Mother," Sophia said, her voice ringing clear against the soundproofed glass. "I believe you need my signature to steal my inheritance."
Caroline froze, her crystal fountain pen hovering an inch above the parchment.
Daniel’s smile vanished. His jaw ticked, a muscle rippling beneath his scarred cheek. His right hand dipped subtly toward the inside of his jacket.
"Don't do it, Daniel," Miller's voice boomed across the boardroom, cold and authoritative. "The building is surrounded by two tactical units of the New York State Police and federal marshals. Every feed from this room is broadcasting live to the United States Attorney’s Office in Lower Manhattan."
"You're bluffing," Daniel sneered, though his eyes darted toward the elevator bank. "This floor's network is air-gapped!"
"It was air-gapped," Sophia said, stepping directly to the central terminal podium at the head of the table, opposite Caroline. "Until Eleanor gave me her master administrative key thirty seconds ago."
Sophia placed her palm against the terminal's biometric glass scanner.
A robotic chime resonated through the boardroom speakers:
