Chapter 20 - The Iron Hand of Justice

In the blackness, the roar of twin Pratt & Whitney jet engines shook the steel hull of the *Caspian Queen*.

Blinding searchlights pierced through the cargo hold’s overhead loading hatches as three Black Hawk helicopters from the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) and the United States Coast Guard Tactical Law Enforcement Team hovered directly above the ship.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DO NOT MOVE!"

Megaphones shattered the night air as flashbang grenades rained through the open ceiling hatches, detonating with concussive, deafening blasts that filled the hold with blinding magnesium fire and disorienting shockwaves.

Arthur’s mercenaries scrambled, disoriented and blinded.

Marcus Bennett and his team surged forward down the catwalk, tackling the guards before they could reach their weapons. Sophia threw herself over Vanessa, shielding the injured woman as federal tactical operators rappelled down fast-ropes from the ceiling, their assault rifles barking in controlled bursts, disabling the remaining hostiles.

Arthur Vance stumbled backward against the bulkhead, coughing violently, his silver cane knocked to the deck. He looked up, his face pale with sudden, terrifying comprehension.

Stepping through the shattered entrance of the hold was Special Agent Bradley Miller, backed by a dozen federal marshals with weapons drawn.

"Arthur Vance," Miller bellowed, kicking Arthur’s cane across the floor. "On your knees! Hands behind your head! You are under arrest for treason, racketeering, the attempted murder of Sophia Vance, and the first-degree murder of Dr. Richard Ward!"

Arthur tried to sneer, tried to summon the imperious authority that had terrorized high finance for forty years. "You have nothing on me, Miller! My lawyers will have these warrants thrown out before dawn!"

"Not this time, Arthur," Sophia said, standing beside Vanessa as federal medics cut the zip-ties from Vanessa's wrists. Sophia held up the satellite phone. "Your confession regarding Dr. Ward’s murder and Daniel’s staged transport crash was broadcast live to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and recorded on an immutable federal evidentiary server."

Sophia took a step closer, looking down at the man who had orchestrated the nightmare of her entire adult life.

"And by the way," Sophia whispered, her voice cutting through the damp air like a scalpel. "Daniel didn't take the Tappan Zee Bridge. Julian Cross tipped off the Marshals three hours ago. Daniel is sitting in a federal interrogation room right now, singing like a canary to save his own life from your hit squad."

Arthur Vance’s face turned an ashen, sickly gray. For the first time in his life, the titan of industry looked small, broken, and utterly defeated. Federal agents forced him to the deck, clamping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists with a definitive, metallic click.

Vanessa leaned against Sophia, her breathing shallow, but a genuine, fierce smile broke through her bruised lips. "You came back for me."

May you like

"We're partners, remember?" Sophia said, wrapping her arm around Vanessa’s shoulder, supporting her weight. "And nobody burns our house down."
