Chapter 3 - The Two Widows

The flashing red and blue lights of NYPD cruisers painted the ornate limestone facade of L'Hiver in rhythmic bursts of crimson and cobalt. Outside, a small crowd of paparazzi, tipped off by an anonymous source within the restaurant staff, was already gathering like vultures catching the scent of fresh carrion.
Inside, the restaurant had been cleared of civilians. The maître d' was nervously offering sparkling water to Detectives Miller and Hayes, two seasoned homicide and white-collar investigators whose expressions were carved from granite.
Daniel Vance sat handcuffed on a velvet chair in the center of the emptied dining hall. His tie was loosened, his bespoke Italian jacket stained with Pomerol and dust. The arrogance that had carried him into the most powerful boardrooms in the country had curdled into a twitching, sweat-sheened paranoia. His corporate attorney, Arthur Cross, was whispering frantically in his ear, but Daniel wasn’t listening. He was staring at the doorway where two women stood side by side.
Sophia had cleaned the wine and melted ice from her trench coat. A medic had placed a cold compress on her bruised ribs, but she had refused transport to the hospital. She stood tall, her jaw set, an aura of sovereign defiance radiating from her.
Beside her sat Vanessa Sterling. The heiress had wrapped an NYPD wool blanket around her bare, stained shoulders. The venom and rivalry that had existed between them an hour ago had been incinerated by the cold reality of Daniel’s recording.
"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said, pulling out a small spiral notebook. "The Federal Bureau of Investigation has just issued an emergency warrant for your electronic devices, personal safe, and access to Vance Capital's servers. But off the record, pal... you kicked your wife in front of forty-two witnesses, including a federal judge who was dining at Table 6. You’re being processed for aggravated assault before we even get to the wire fraud and conspiracy to commit murder."
"She provoked me!" Daniel spat, his voice cracking with desperation. "She assaulted Miss Sterling first! She threw glass, she slapped her! I was defending a third party! Arthur, tell them!"
Arthur Cross adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, looking thoroughly miserable. "Daniel, shut up. Do not say another word."
"Defending her?" Vanessa’s voice cut through the room like broken glass. She pushed herself up from the booth, letting the blanket drop slightly, revealing her tear-streaked face.
She walked over to where Daniel sat bound. Her eyes were swollen, but beneath the pain, a dangerous fire was igniting.
"You weren't defending me, Daniel," Vanessa said, her voice shaking with venomous fury. "You were protecting your investment. You were protecting the idiot girl who was supposed to sign over three hundred million dollars of her family’s legacy so you could run off to the Emirates."
"Vanessa, baby, listen to me," Daniel begged, trying to lean forward, his eyes pleading. "It was locker room talk! I was bluffing my offshore broker to make myself look ruthless! You know how Wall Street works—you have to act like a killer to get the best yields! I love you! I was going to leave Sophia for you!"
Vanessa looked at him for a long, silent moment. Then, with devastating precision, she spat directly onto his cheek.
"My father had a mild stroke last year, Daniel. You knew that. You held his hand in the hospital and told him you would protect our family name. You sick, narcissistic monster. If my father has another relapse because of your treason, I swear to God I will spend every penny of the Sterling trust to buy the prison you rot in."
Daniel winced, wiping the saliva against his shoulder as the officers pulled him to his feet. "You're both crazy! You think you can take me down? Sophia, you don't have the proof! A rogue audio clip won't hold up in court against my defense team!"
Sophia walked over, stopping inches from Daniel. She looked into the face of the man she had loved for nearly a decade. She searched for any lingering trace of the romantic boy who had proposed under the cherry blossoms in Kyoto. There was nothing. Just an empty vessel driven by greed and cruelty.
"It’s not just the audio, Daniel," Sophia said softly.
Daniel’s breathing hitched. "What?"
"Did you really think I didn’t notice the pharmacy refills?" Sophia whispered, her voice dropping into a register that made Daniel’s blood turn to slush. "Did you think I didn’t notice the faint bitter taste in the Earl Grey tea you brewed for me every evening? You started with low-dose digitalis, didn't you? Slowing my heart rate, making me lethargic, setting up the narrative of my 'declining health.'"
Detective Hayes stepped forward, his expression darkening. "We executed a search of your private townhome forty minutes ago, Mr. Vance. The crime lab found the vials hidden behind the baseboard in your master bathroom. The prescription was written by an offshore pill mill in Belize."
Daniel’s knees buckled. If the officers hadn't been holding him by the biceps, he would have collapsed onto the floor.
"Let’s go, Vance," Detective Miller said coldly, clicking the cuffs tighter. "You've got a long night ahead of you."
As they dragged Daniel toward the double doors, his leather shoes scuffing against the marble, he twisted his neck, his face wild with rage and panic. "SOPHIA! YOU HAVE NOTHING WITHOUT ME! YOU'LL DIE PENNILESS! ARTHUR, CALL MY FATHER! CALL HIM NOW!"
The heavy oak doors swung shut, cutting off his frantic screams.
Sophia stood in the center of the silent room, the adrenaline suddenly draining from her body, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion. She swayed slightly, her hand reaching out for support.
Before she could fall, a warm hand caught her elbow.
Sophia looked over. It was Vanessa.
The mistress and the wife stood alone amidst the ruins of their illusions.

"Come on," Vanessa said softly, her voice remarkably steady despite her smeared makeup. "My town car is outside. We need to talk."
