Chapter 43 - The Lazarus Protocol

Water dripped in monotonous, rhythmic taps against the limestone ceiling of the underground conduit. Sophia stumbled through the ankle-deep runoff, the cold seep soaking through her leather boots, but the numbness in her limbs had nothing to do with the freezing Hudson winter.

"Keep moving," Miller muttered from behind her, his tactical flashlight sliced through the claustrophobic darkness. His breathing was ragged; a piece of flying glass from the terrace had sliced an ugly, two-inch gash across his left temple, smearing dark crimson down into his stubble.

"How long?" Sophia demanded, stopping abruptly and turning on him, her eyes burning with a feverish intensity. "How long did you know he was breathing?"

Miller halted, the beam of the flashlight dropping to the sodden floor between them. "I didn't know he was alive, Sophia. I swear to God on my badge. We matched dental records from the Westchester crash—or at least, the records submitted by the private clinic in Bern that handled Julian's personal affairs. It was a scrubbed dossier. Julian’s entire network didn't work for the government; it worked for a private syndicate called *The Obsidian Ledger*."

Sophia pressed both hands against the raw stone walls to steady her spinning head. Every memory of her five-year marriage came rushing back like a sequence of toxic film reels. The late-night departures. The encrypted burner phones hidden in the hollowed spines of antique leather books in Daniel's study. The subtle, patronizing way he had touched her cheek whenever she asked about the sudden influx of foreign shell companies.

*She had caught him in bed with Julian's young mistress, Victoria, three weeks ago.* She had thought that was the bottom of the abyss. She had thought the affair was the ultimate betrayal—the sordid, disgusting cliché of a trophy husband betraying the heiress who elevated him.

*It was never an affair.* It was a reconnaissance meeting. Victoria was a courier for Eleanor Sterling’s international smuggling ring, and Daniel was orchestrating a hostile takeover of the entire family empire.

"The video on my phone," Sophia said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, terrifying quiet. "Eleanor was sitting next to him. Eleanor hated Daniel. She called him a low-born parasite who married into the Sterling name for scraps."

"Greed makes strange bedfellows," Miller said, pushing her forward gently through the dark toward a rusted iron ladder that climbed into a storm runoff grate near the old train depot. "Eleanor was facing twenty-five years in Supermax. Daniel had the extraction team and the mercenary muscle. Caroline had the political cover and the wire keys. Together, they have the triumvirate: muscle, routes, and capital. But they don't have Julian's ultimate vault."

Sophia reached the base of the iron ladder. Above them, the faint rumble of a diesel engine vibrated through the iron rungs.

"What's in the vault, Marcus?"

Miller met her gaze in the faint gloom. "Julian didn't just hoard money, Sophia. Julian kept the blackmail files on every sitting senator, judge, and foreign minister who ever touched Sterling money for the last forty years. Daniel doesn't just want to be rich. He wants to be untouchable."

Sophia gripped the frozen iron rung, her knuckles whitening until the skin threatened to split. "Then we don't run from him. We burn the vault to the ground with him inside it."
