Chapter 30 - The Iron Hand of Justice

Three days later, the high-security medical wing of Manhattan Presbyterian Hospital was surrounded by a joint perimeter of Federal Marshals and New York State Police.

Sophia sat propped up in bed, color finally returning to her face. Vanessa stood by the sunny window, peeling an orange with methodical precision, while Special Agent Miller stood at the foot of the bed with a leather-bound briefing folio.

"Arthur Vance survived the marrow extraction," Miller reported, his tone formal but relieved. "He’s currently under twenty-four-hour suicide watch at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. His attorneys attempted to plead diminished capacity, but the Southern District of New York has already unsealed a forty-eight-count indictment against him: racketeering, maritime smuggling, treason, and attempted murder. He will die in ADX Florence."

Sophia looked down at her hands. The purple bruising along her veins had begun to fade to a faint yellow. "And Daniel?"

"Daniel took a plea agreement," Miller said. "He testified against both Arthur and Victoria in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. He’s looking at thirty-five years without possibility of parole. He broke down in the holding cell this morning when he realized his bank accounts had been entirely seized under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He doesn't have a nickel left to his name."

Vanessa handed a slice of orange to Sophia, smiling faintly. "A fitting end for a parasite who traded his soul for an empire he didn't even understand."

"What about Victoria?" Sophia asked, her voice steady.

Miller paused, closing the folio with a quiet thud. "Victoria was transferred to the federal psychiatric facility in Butner, North Carolina, awaiting federal capital charges. She refuses to speak to prosecutors. But during the forensic teardown of her offshore servers in Rhode Island, my cyber team found something disturbing."

Sophia’s eyes narrowed. "What kind of thing?"

"Victoria’s bank accounts didn't just receive deposits from Arthur’s shell companies," Miller said, pulling out a single printed financial wire transfer. "Three weeks before Daniel began poisoning you, Victoria received an offshore transfer of eighty million dollars from a private trust based in Liechtenstein."

"Liechtenstein?" Vanessa frowned. "Arthur didn't bank in Liechtenstein. Arthur kept all his money in the Caymans and Panama."

"We know," Miller said, his jaw tightening. "The wire came from a numbered account registered under an old corporate alias: *Sterling-Vance International.* An account that was supposedly closed twenty-five years ago."

Sophia felt a strange, cold prickle at the base of her skull. "That was my father’s private discretionary account. Nobody had the cryptographic keys to that fund except him."

"And your mother," Vanessa added quietly.

Sophia shook her head. "My mother died in a car crash on the Long Island Expressway when I was fourteen. Her body was identified by dental records."

Miller leaned forward, placing the wire transfer document directly onto Sophia’s lap.

"We re-examined the dental records from that accident yesterday, Sophia," Miller said, his voice dropping into a tense, uneasy cadence. "The forensic files in the Suffolk County archive were altered twenty-four hours after the crash. The woman buried in the Sterling family plot wasn't your mother."

Sophia froze. The orange slice slipped from her fingers, tumbling onto the white sheets.
