Chapter 9 - The Ghost's Farewell

Three days later, the rain had completely cleared, leaving behind a crisp, cool autumn afternoon in Lake Forest.

The private cemetery of the Moretti family sat on a quiet hill overlooking the endless blue expanse of Lake Michigan.

Ancient oak trees shed golden and crimson leaves, scattering them across the polished black granite headstones.

Dante stood before Elena’s grave, holding Mia’s small hand in his right and a bouquet of white roses in his left.

Beside them stood Isabella, dressed in a dignified black maternity dress, holding a bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums for Lucas.

Between Elena’s restored monument and the family mausoleum now stood a brand new, magnificent marble headstone.

It read: *Lucas Silva — Beloved Husband, Fearless Protector, Brother to the Moretti Bloodline.*

Mateo and twenty of Dante’s elite soldiers stood at the base of the hill, their heads bowed in solemn respect.

Dante knelt down before Elena’s stone, gently laying the white roses across the cold, polished surface.

"I brought her home, Elena," Dante whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion that only the dead could hear.

"She has your eyes, your laugh, and your stubborn, beautiful heart," he said, swallowing back the lump in his throat.

Mia knelt down beside her father, leaning her small head against the cold marble stone as if listening for a heartbeat.

"I miss you, Mommy," Mia said softly, her childish voice carrying into the gentle autumn breeze.

"Daddy found me just like you said he would, and he has a really big house with lots of puppies," she added innocently.

Dante closed his eyes, feeling an overwhelming warmth wash over him, as if Elena’s spirit was resting her hand on his shoulder.

He reached into his pocket and placed the gold wedding ring that had tumbled from the suitcase directly onto the base of the stone.

"You are finally at peace, my love," Dante said, kissing the stone before standing up tall against the sky.

He stepped to the side, allowing Isabella to approach Lucas’s new resting place with her flowers.

Isabella knelt slowly, supporting her heavy belly, placing the yellow chrysanthemums gently over the fresh earth.

She traced the carved letters of her late husband’s name, her tears falling freely onto the rich soil.

"You did it, Lucas," Isabella wept, a mixture of profound sorrow and victorious pride washing over her face.

"Your sacrifice saved Don Dante’s little girl, and our son will grow up knowing his father was a true hero," she promised.

"Rest now, my love; your mission is complete, and we are finally safe," Isabella whispered, kissing the stone.

Suddenly, a sharp, sudden gasp escaped Isabella’s lips as she clutched the lower curve of her stomach.

She staggered slightly, her breath catching as a visible wave of pain rippled across her beautiful face.

Dante was at her side in an instant, catching her gently by the waist and supporting her full weight before she could fall.

"Isabella? What is it?" Dante asked with immediate, protective concern.

Isabella looked up at him, a shocked, breathless laugh breaking through her lingering tears.

"Don Dante... the baby," she gasped, gripping his muscular arm tightly as another contraction hit her.

"He’s coming... Lucas’s son is coming right now!"
