Chapter 4 - The Betrayal at the Docks

The Chicago night was drenched in freezing rain, slicking the industrial pavement of the south docks into black mirrors.
Three armored SUVs glided through the rusted iron gates like silent predators hunting in the dark.
Inside the lead vehicle, Dante sat with an assault rifle resting across his knees, watching the rain streak the bulletproof glass.
Beside him, Isabella held a heavy woolen blanket over her pregnant belly, her right hand clutching the silver revolver.
"The storage lockers are located in Warehouse Seven, directly behind the grain elevator," Isabella pointed through the windshield.
Dante tapped his earpiece, speaking in a whisper that crackled through his men's encrypted headsets.
"No sirens, no lights, suppressors on all weapons," Dante commanded with chilling authority.
"If you see anyone wearing the Vance security emblem, put them down immediately," he added.
The convoy rolled to a stop fifty yards from the rusted corrugated metal structure of Warehouse Seven.
Dante was the first out, his long coat fluttering in the icy gale as he scanned the perimeter with night-vision optics.
He reached back into the SUV, taking Isabella’s hand to help her navigate the slippery, oil-slicked asphalt.
Four heavily armed guards moved in an impenetrable diamond formation around Isabella, shielding her from every angle.
They breached the side door of Warehouse Seven, stepping into the cavernous, smelling space of stagnant water and rust.
Rows of green metal lockers stretched into the darkness like the tombstones of an industrial graveyard.
"Number four-twelve," Isabella whispered, her breath condensing in the freezing air of the unheated warehouse.
They navigated down the third aisle, their boots making no sound on the cracked concrete floor.
There it was: Locker 412, fitted with a heavy electronic security pad that glowed with a faint red LED light.
Dante stood guard, his weapon raised toward the shadows as Isabella approached the scanner.
She pressed her trembling right thumb against the glass plate, holding her breath in desperate prayer.
A low electronic chime echoed through the silent warehouse as the LED light shifted from blood-red to vibrant green.
The heavy steel door popped open with a hiss of releasing air pressure.
Inside the locker rested a steel lockbox, a satellite phone, and an old cassette tape labeled *For Dante.*
Isabella pulled out the lockbox, her fingers finding a small brass key taped to the bottom of the container.
She opened it quickly, revealing an old spiral-bound diary and a set of master keys to the Pier 42 grain silo.
"This is it," Isabella whispered, handing the keys to Dante with triumphant relief in her eyes.
Suddenly, the harsh beam of a high-powered spotlight cut through the darkness, blinding them instantly from the rafters above.
"Drop your weapons, Moretti, or the pregnant girl dies first!" a mocking voice echoed from the metal catwalks.
Dante did not drop his weapon; he stepped completely in front of Isabella, shielding her entire body with his broad back.
Dozens of laser sights painted Dante’s chest with glowing red dots, but his eyes never wavered from the shadows.
Stepping forward onto the upper platform was Senator Vance himself, flanked by six private mercenaries in tactical gear.
"You were always too sentimental, Dante," the Senator sneered, leaning over the rusted railing.
"Elena died because she was soft, Lucas died because he was stupid, and you will die because of a maid," Vance laughed.
"Where is my daughter, Vance?" Dante asked, his voice steady, refusing to show even a flicker of fear.
"Mia is already loaded onto the cargo ship heading to Antwerp; you’re too late to save the brat," Vance gloated.
"My daughter’s name does not belong in your filthy mouth," Dante responded, his tone deathly quiet.
"Kill them all, and leave Dante alive long enough to watch me take over his territory," Vance barked to his men.
Before the mercenaries could squeeze their triggers, Isabella did something nobody in the warehouse expected.
She reached around Dante’s shoulder, aimed the small silver revolver directly at the massive overhead junction box, and fired.

The bullet struck the main power transformer, unleashing a blinding shower of electrical sparks and plunging the warehouse into pitch darkness.
"FIRE!" Dante roared, opening fire into the rafters as his men engaged the enemy in a deafening symphony of suppressed gunfire.
