Chapter 1 - The Shattered Gala

CRASH!

The sound of imported Italian porcelain exploding across the polished marble floor silenced the entire grand ballroom of the Moretti estate.

More than two hundred members of Chicago’s high-society criminal elite froze with their champagne flutes hovering in midair.

Sofia, a nineteen-year-old orphan and junior maid, slammed violently against the edge of the mahogany banquet table.

Her slender body trembled violently as shards of porcelain dug into her stockings and knees.

Only three seconds earlier, Vanessa Sterling had deliberately reached out and snatched the heavy silver tray from Sofia’s hands.

Vanessa was dripping in five-carat diamonds and draped in an emerald silk designer gown that cost more than a maid’s yearly wage.

With cold calculation hidden behind a practiced beauty pageant smile, Vanessa had violently twisted Sofia’s hand backward into the folding heavy oak service door.

Then she had shoved the defenseless girl directly into the display of crystal and bone china.

Sofia let out a muffled, agonizing shriek while clutching her swollen, purple-black wrist against her chest.

Vanessa smoothed the wrinkles of her silk dress, her eyes gleaming with sadistic amusement.

“Watch where you are going, you clumsy, worthless little rat!” Vanessa sneered, projecting her voice so every guest could hear.

The ballroom fell into an icy, suffocating hush.

Billionaire investors, corrupt city judges, and underworld capos watched in complete stillness.

Nobody dared to interfere with the woman who was scheduled to marry the King of Chicago in less than two weeks.

Vanessa took a sip of her vintage champagne and looked down at the weeping girl with utter disgust.

Then suddenly—

BANG!

A crystal tumbler filled with single-malt scotch slammed against the head table with the force of a gunshot.

The thick glass shattered into a thousand glittering pieces, soaking the white linen tablecloth.

Luca Moretti rose from his leather armchair like a predatory panther awakening from a deep slumber.

At thirty-four years old, Luca was the undisputed boss of the Moretti syndicate, an empire built on steel, shadows, and absolute fear.

He was over six feet two inches of tailored perfection and lethal muscle, covered in bespoke Italian wool.

His razor-sharp jawline tightened until the veins in his neck threatened to rupture.

Every single person in the room stopped breathing as his heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

“Who the hell did this to her?” Luca’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating through the ribcages of everyone present.

Vanessa immediately swiveled on her four-inch designer heels, plastering an angelic, worried pout across her ruby-red lips.

She glided forward, placing both of her manicured hands directly against Luca’s broad chest to block his view of the injured maid.

“Oh, darling, please do not ruin our engagement celebration over an idiot servant!” Vanessa cooed in a sweet, manipulative tone.

“She tripped over her own clumsy feet, darling, and caught her hand in the pantry door because she was rushing!” Vanessa added, stroking his lapel.

Luca did not look at Vanessa.

He did not blink.

He did not even acknowledge the perfume that Vanessa had worn specifically to seduce his senses.

With one effortless motion, Luca reached up, gripped Vanessa’s delicate wrist, and physically removed her hand from his chest.

He pushed past her as if she were made of thin air.

Luca dropped to one knee right in front of the sobbing maid, heedless of the broken porcelain piercing his trousers.

His ruthless, terrifying eyes softened into genuine concern as he looked at the girl.

Sofia’s late father had taken a bullet for Luca’s father ten years ago, an ancient blood debt that Luca never forgot.

“Sofia,” Luca murmured, his deep voice thick with quiet restraint.

He reached down and gently cradled the girl’s trembling forearm.

What he saw made the temperature in the ballroom drop below freezing.

Her wrist was swollen to twice its normal size, turning a grotesque shade of mottled purple and deep crimson.

Two of her delicate fingers were bent at unnatural angles, clearly fractured by immense, crushing mechanical force.

These were not the injuries of someone who tripped.

These were the defensive wounds of someone whose hand had been placed in a doorframe and repeatedly crushed.

Luca’s fingers tightened on the hem of his jacket as a terrifying, murderous heat surged through his veins.

“Look at me, Sofia,” Luca ordered softly, his golden-amber eyes locking onto her tear-stained face.

Sofia was hyperventilating, her teeth chattering so hard they clicked.

She wasn't trembling from the broken bones.

She was shaking because Vanessa was standing directly behind Luca, silently running her manicured index finger across her throat in a clear death threat.

Luca felt the girl's terror and slowly, methodically turned his head toward his glamorous fiancée.

“Tell me what happened here,” Luca said, each syllable dripping with liquid nitrogen.

Vanessa let out a sharp, nervous giggle that grated against the silence of the room.

“Why are you humiliating me in front of our guests over a girl who washes toilets?” Vanessa scoffed, crossing her arms defensively.

“She is a nobody, Luca! If she cannot carry a soup tray without breaking imported china, she deserves to be thrown into the gutter!”

Those words sealed Vanessa's fate before the sentence was even finished.

Before Luca could unleash the beast inside him, Sofia lunged forward with a burst of frantic adrenaline.

With her uninjured hand, Sofia clamped onto the sleeve of Luca’s expensive tuxedo jacket with desperate strength.

Tears cascaded down Sofia’s bruised cheeks, washing away the blood from a small cut on her temple.

“Please, Don Moretti… kill me if you want, but you have to know!” Sofia sobbed, her voice breaking into a ragged scream that pierced the ballroom.

Vanessa’s aristocratic face instantly drained of all its smug confidence.

“Shut your mouth, you filthy orphan!” Vanessa shrieked, taking a menacing step toward Sofia.

Luca rose to his full height in an instant, stepping between them like an impenetrable wall of steel.

“Speak, Sofia,” Luca commanded, not taking his burning eyes off his fiancée.

Sofia held up her mangled, shattered hand for all the underworld bosses to witness.

“She slammed the heavy oak door on my hand because I tried to stop her!” Sofia wailed, her chest heaving with agony.

The crowd gasped in shock, but Sofia’s next words destroyed whatever peace remained in the mansion.

“Your daughter, Don Moretti… she locked Lily in the soundproof attic vault!” Sofia screamed, collapsing into hysterical tears.

Luca’s heart violently seized in his chest.

His seven-year-old angel.

His precious Lily, the only pure thing left in his blood-soaked world.

The little girl who had lost her mother to cancer two years ago, now trapped in a dark, airtight vault because of the monster he brought into his home.

For two seconds, Luca Moretti did not breathe.

Then, Vanessa took one terrified step backward toward the grand marble staircase.

Luca reacted with primal, terrifying speed.

He seized a heavy, solid-oak banquet chair and hurled it across the floor, splintering it against the base of the staircase and cutting off Vanessa's escape route.

“YOU TOUCHED MY CHILD?” Luca’s roar shook the crystal chandeliers overhead.

He spun around toward the periphery of the room where a dozen armed guards stood like statues.

“MARCO! GET TO THE ATTIC! TEAR DOWN THE DOOR!” Luca screamed, his veins bulging against his forehead.

Marco, the six-foot-four head of security, drew his custom firearm and bolted up the stairs with four heavily armed bodyguards right behind him.

Vanessa stood pinned against the wall, her skin as white as freshly fallen snow.

And then, from three stories above the ballroom, muffled through the vents, came the shrill, heartbreaking scream of a terrified child:

“DADDY! HELP ME! IT'S COLD!”

Luca’s blood ran completely ice-cold.
