Chapter 3 - The Cold Eyes of a Predator

The silence in the grand ballroom was so thick that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like an approaching freight train.
Two hundred of Chicago’s most ruthless men and their wives stood completely paralyzed beneath the massive chandeliers.
They had heard the gunshots echoing from the upper floors only moments earlier.
Now, the heavy double doors at the top of the grand marble staircase swung slowly open.
Luca Moretti emerged into the light, holding his daughter Lily wrapped securely in his black tuxedo jacket.
The contrast was striking and terrifying: the most lethal killer in the state holding a tiny child whose blue lips were slowly regaining color.
Lily’s little arms were wrapped around her father's neck as if letting go would plunge her back into the abyss.
Beside them, Marco was dragging Vanessa Sterling down the stairs by the scruff of her emerald silk dress.
Vanessa’s designer shoes were gone, left behind in the struggle on the third floor.
Her meticulously styled blonde hair was a ruined, tangled mess, and her tears had smeared mascara completely down her cheeks.
She looked less like a glamorous mafia queen and more like a captured war criminal being led to the gallows.
The ballroom guests gasped collectively as Marco shoved Vanessa onto her knees at the center of the dance floor.
She landed directly in the center of the shattered porcelain that Sofia had been forced to drop twenty minutes ago.
Sharp ceramic fragments dug into Vanessa’s exposed knees, drawing thin beads of crimson blood.
Vanessa whimpered, looking up at the surrounding crowd of her former social peers for sympathy.
Not a single person moved to help her.
Every capo, every politician, and every hitman in that room knew the one sacred rule of the Moretti bloodline:
You can steal their money, you can hijack their shipments, but you never, under any circumstances, touch their children.
Luca descended the final steps with steady, agonizingly deliberate footfalls.
He did not walk toward Vanessa; instead, he carried Lily directly over to where Sofia was sitting on a plush velvet chair.
An estate doctor had already arrived, gently splinting Sofia’s broken fingers and wrapping her swollen wrist in white bandages.
Luca knelt before Sofia, holding Lily so the little girl could see her rescuer.
“Sofia risked her life to tell me where you were, Lily,” Luca said gently, brushing a damp lock of hair from his daughter’s eyes.
Lily looked down at Sofia, her brown eyes filling with fresh tears of gratitude.
“Thank you, Miss Sofia,” Lily whispered, her voice tiny and fragile.
“She was going to leave me in the cold until the party was over tomorrow…”
Sofia began to cry silently, shaking her head as she looked at the little girl.
“You are safe now, baby. Your daddy has you,” Sofia murmured softly, ignoring the throbbing pain in her fractured bones.
Luca looked up at Sofia, his gaze piercing and full of an unpayable debt.
“You will never clean another floor in this city, Sofia,” Luca promised, his voice clear enough for the entire room to hear.
“You and your younger brother will have a home, an education, and the full protection of the Moretti family until the day I die.”
A murmur of respect rippled through the gathered mafia soldiers along the walls.
Don Moretti’s word was absolute law, carved in granite and sealed in blood.
Luca then gently handed Lily over to the family pediatrician, Dr. Rossi, who was waiting with warm blankets and hot tea in the private study.
“Keep her warm, Victor. If she so much as coughs, I want a full medical team in this house within ten minutes,” Luca instructed.
Dr. Rossi nodded grimly and carried the little girl away through a side security door guarded by four heavily armed men.
The moment that heavy oak door clicked shut, the warm father vanished entirely.
What remained in the center of the ballroom was the Devil of Chicago himself.
Luca turned around slowly, unbuttoning his tuxedo vest and rolling up the sleeves of his white dress shirt to his forearms.
Tattoos of ancient Latin scripture and syndicate marks coiled around his muscular arms like venomous snakes.
He walked toward Vanessa with terrifying, predatory patience.
Vanessa began to scramble backward across the floor, leaving small streaks of blood from her cut knees on the polished marble.
“Luca, please! You have to listen to me! I did it for us!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice shrill and completely devoid of sanity.
The music in the ballroom had long stopped; only her desperate cries filled the cavernous room.
“For us?” Luca asked, stopping three feet in front of her, his towering shadow swallowing her completely.
“You locked a seven-year-old child in an airtight wine vault with the refrigeration turned on… for us?”
Vanessa clutched her hands together in a prayer-like gesture, sobbing uncontrollably.
“She is a distraction, Luca! She is always crying about her dead mother!” Vanessa screamed, abandoning all logic.
“Every time I try to talk to you about the wedding, about the business, about the charity boards, you run to her!”
The crowd of hardened mobsters shifted uncomfortably, disgusted by the socialite's brazen cruelty.
“I just wanted her to be quiet for one night!” Vanessa wept, trying to reach for the cuff of Luca’s trousers.
“I was going to let her out after the guests left! I swear to God, Luca, she wasn't going to die!”
Luca looked down at her with eyes devoid of any human warmth.
“You're lying, Vanessa,” a quiet voice spoke up from the edge of the room.
Everyone turned toward Sofia, who was slowly standing up with her arm in a white sling.

“She is lying, Don Moretti,” Sofia repeated, stepping forward onto the dance floor.
“She wasn't going to let Lily out tomorrow morning. She was never going to let her out at all.”
