Chapter 4 - The Maid's Hidden Evidence

The entire ballroom held its breath as Sofia walked into the center of the room.
Vanessa whipped her head around, her eyes bulging with venomous hatred toward the young maid.
“You lying little gutter whore!” Vanessa shrieked, spitting blood and saliva onto the floor.
“Luca, she is trying to frame me! She is trying to tear our family apart because she wants your money!”
Luca raised a single, scarred finger without looking at Vanessa.
Instantly, Marco stepped forward and jammed the cold barrel of his firearm against the back of Vanessa’s neck.
Vanessa choked on her own words, instantly falling silent as cold steel pressed against her spine.
“Go on, Sofia,” Luca said, his voice flat, steady, and terrifyingly calm.
Sofia reached into the pocket of her black maid’s apron with her uninjured left hand.
She pulled out a small, cracked smartphone wrapped in a protective rubber case.
“Miss Sterling didn't just lock the door today, Don Moretti,” Sofia explained, her voice steadying with every breath.
“For the past three weeks, every time you went to New York or Detroit for business, she tormented Lily.”
A low, rumbling growl vibrated in Luca’s chest, like a lion waiting to tear its prey to shreds.
“What did she do?” Luca asked, though he dreaded the answer with every fiber of his being.
Sofia tapped the screen of the phone with her trembling thumb.
“Lily was terrified to tell you because Miss Sterling threatened to have her sent to a boarding school in Switzerland,” Sofia continued.
“She told Lily that if she cried to her father, Don Moretti would think she was too weak to be a Moretti.”
Luca’s fists clenched so hard that his knuckles turned ghostly white, his fingernails digging into his palms until skin broke.
“So I started recording the hallway outside Lily’s bedroom,” Sofia said, looking directly into Luca’s burning eyes.
Sofia turned the phone around and pressed play on a video file.
She connected the phone to the ballroom's wireless projection system with the help of a nearby technician.
Instantly, the massive eighty-inch display screens on both sides of the ballroom flickered to life.
The date stamp on the screen showed last Tuesday, at two o'clock in the morning.
The video showed the dim third-floor hallway outside Lily’s bedroom.
The bedroom door opened, and Vanessa appeared on the screen, dressed in a silk robe, holding a leather belt in her hand.
A collective gasp echoed across the two hundred guests as Vanessa dragged the sobbing, terrified child out of the room.
On the video, Vanessa’s voice came through the high-end ballroom speakers with horrific, crystal-clear clarity:
“Stop crying about your pathetic mother, Lily! She’s dead! She rotted in the dirt, and you’re going to end up just like her!”
The guests watched in stunned horror as Vanessa pushed the little girl down onto the cold hardwood floor.
“Your father is marrying me! I am the lady of this house now!” Vanessa screamed on the recording.
“If you say one word about the bruises on your arms, I will make sure your daddy sends you somewhere where nobody will ever find you!”
In the ballroom, several wives of prominent mafia bosses turned away in tears, unable to watch the cruelty.
Hardened hitmen who had spent their entire lives killing grown men looked at Vanessa with disgust and lethal disdain.
The video continued, showing Sofia stepping out of the linen closet to shield the child.
On the recording, Vanessa slapped Sofia violently across the face, then turned and kicked Lily’s favorite teddy bear down the stairs.
The screen went black as the video ended.
The grand ballroom was as silent as a tomb.
Vanessa Sterling was trembling so violently that her teeth were chattering like dice in a cup.
She looked around at the faces of Chicago’s most powerful families.
Where she once saw flattery, envy, and fake admiration, she now saw only one thing: total, absolute condemnation.
Nobody would save her.
Her father, a corrupt real estate mogul sitting at table three, deliberately lowered his head and refused to meet her gaze.
He knew that trying to defend his daughter right now would mean the extermination of his entire bloodline before sunrise.
Luca slowly stepped forward until the toe of his polished dress shoe touched Vanessa’s bleeding knee.
“Three weeks,” Luca whispered, the words carrying the weight of a thousand executioner's blades.
“You terrorized my motherless child in her own home for three weeks while sleeping in my bed?”
Vanessa looked up, her face completely pale, all of her vanity and arrogance stripped away like dead skin.
“Luca… please… I was stressed… the wedding planning… the pressure…” she babbled incoherently.
“You think this is about wedding planning?” Luca asked softly.
He turned his gaze toward Marco.
“Bring up the laptop from her private vanity,” Luca ordered.
“The one my technicians intercepted when she tried to send an encrypted file ten minutes before the party started.”
Vanessa’s jaw dropped in absolute horror.
The color left her lips, and her eyes filled with a new, much deeper level of panic.
