Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Shadows

The low hum of the encrypted burner phone sounded like a death knell in the cavernous foyer.
Dante slowly reached into the dark crevice of the suitcase and retrieved the glowing device.
His thumb brushed the glass screen, reading the short message over and over until the words burned into his retinas.
Evelyn sank against the wallpaper, sliding down until her knees hit the carpet, her face as pale as a corpse.
"Do not move a single muscle, Evelyn," Dante whispered, his voice dangerously devoid of human warmth.
Four armed guards immediately flanked Evelyn, their assault rifles raised and aimed with ruthless precision at the heiress.
Isabella stood weeping silently, her hands trembling violently around the worn paper written in her late husband's hand.
Dante turned toward the pregnant woman, his expression softening only by a millimeter out of respect for her pain.
"Read it, Isabella," Dante commanded quietly, though his eyes never left the terrified woman on the stairs.
"It says... Lucas wrote that he was ordered to cut the brake lines of your wife’s car," Isabella choked out, her voice cracking.
"Who ordered him?" Dante asked, the air around him growing so cold that even the armed guards shuddered.
"He says he refused, but they threatened my life... they threatened to kill me while I was barely pregnant," she wept.
Isabella wiped a tear from her cheek and continued, reading Lucas's frantic, guilt-ridden confession.
"Lucas wrote that he managed to smuggle Elena out before the car was torched to fake her death," she read.
"He hid Elena and the unborn child in an abandoned farm near Lake Geneva," Isabella said, her voice shaking.
"Then why did Lucas die in that ravine?" Dante asked, stepping closer to Isabella, his fists clenched tight.
"Because Evelyn Vance found out that Lucas spared them," Isabella whispered, looking up in sheer horror.
Dante’s head whipped around toward Evelyn, whose painted lips parted in a silent, suffocating scream.
"Is this true?" Dante asked, his voice a low rumble of approaching thunder that rattled the glass windows.
"She’s lying! She’s just a maid trying to steal my place!" Evelyn screeched, clawing at the staircase railing.
Dante did not waste another word on her; he pressed the callback button on the burner phone and placed it on speaker.
The line rang once, twice, and then clicked open to the sound of crashing waves and industrial machinery.
"Vance, you’re late," a gruff, heavily accented voice barked from the other end of the receiver.
"The freighter leaves for Eastern Europe in two hours, and the girl cannot be on American soil by sunrise," the man said.
Dante stared down at the phone, his breathing completely calm, controlled by pure, murderous adrenaline.
"Who am I speaking to?" Dante asked softly, letting the silence of the mansion amplify his tone.
The voice on the other end froze instantly, realizing immediately that the plan had been compromised.
"Moretti..." the voice gasped, followed by the metallic clatter of a weapon being racked into battery.
"If a single hair on my daughter's head is harmed, I will flay you alive in front of your family," Dante promised.
The line abruptly went dead, leaving only the hollow dial tone echoing through the high-ceilinged mansion.
Dante tossed the phone onto the floor, where it shattered into fragments against the hard Italian marble.
He turned back to Evelyn, whose chest was heaving with hyperventilating panic as she begged for her life.
"Dante, please, my father made me do it... the Vance family needed your empire weakened!" she sobbed.
"Where is Elena?" Dante asked, ignoring her pathetic pleas entirely as he stepped right into her personal space.
"She died... she died two years ago from pneumonia in the safe house, I swear to God!" Evelyn screamed.
"And my daughter?" Dante asked, leaning down until his lips were an inch from Evelyn’s ear.
"She’s alive... she’s at the old grain silo near Pier 42... they’re taking her tonight!" Evelyn confessed.
Isabella gasped, pressing her hand over her seven-month belly, feeling the kick of her own unborn child.
She looked at Dante with fiery determination cutting through her grief.
"Lucas died trying to protect your daughter, Don Dante," Isabella said, standing tall despite her physical pain.
"I will not let his sacrifice be in vain; let me help you find where Lucas hid the key to the silo," she added.
Dante looked at the pregnant widow, seeing the unyielding courage of the man who had died for his family.
"Arm every man in the compound," Dante ordered, his deep voice carrying through every hallway of the fortress.
"Lock this traitor in the wine cellar, strip her of everything, and make sure she cannot take her own life," Dante commanded.
The guards seized Evelyn by her arms, dragging her screaming down the marble steps she had tried to murder Isabella upon.
Her designer heels scraped against the stone until the heavy basement door slammed shut, cutting off her cries.
Dante turned toward Isabella, offering her his arm with the utmost reverence and gentleness.
"You are no longer a maid in this house, Isabella," Dante declared, his eyes burning with resolved vengeance.

"You are the widow of a hero, and your child will be raised as royalty under my protection," he vowed.
"Now, tell me everything Lucas wrote in that letter, before my daughter is lost forever," Dante urged.
