Chapter 1 - The Shattered Marble

Inside the suffocating opulence of the Moretti estate, the sound of polished leather on stone echoed like a countdown.
Seven months into her pregnancy, Isabella gripped the brass railing of the grand staircase with white, trembling knuckles.
Every single step sent a sharp pulse of exhaustion radiating through her lower back and swollen ankles.
In front of her, perched high on designer heels, stood Evelyn Vance, the billionaire heiress betrothed to Chicago’s most ruthless crime syndicate boss.
Evelyn did not merely glance down at Isabella; she sneered as if observing vermin crawling across an altar.
At Isabella’s feet sat a heavy vintage leather suitcase, reinforced with brass corners and locked with heavy steel clasps.
Isabella took a ragged breath and begged, her voice barely louder than a whisper, for just five minutes of rest.
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, venomous arrogance.
"I did not ask for a sob story about your pathetic bastard child," Evelyn hissed, stepping down one step to loom over the pregnant maid.
Before Isabella could even apologize, Evelyn shoved the heavy, sixty-pound suitcase directly against Isabella’s chest.
The immense weight struck Isabella off balance, ripping her frail fingers away from the smooth balustrade.
Gravity pulled the heavy luggage down, dragging Isabella forward toward a deadly thirty-foot tumble down the marble flight.
Isabella screamed, closing her eyes and throwing both arms defensively over her unborn child, bracing for impact.
The deadly fall never came.
A massive, calloused hand clamped around Isabella’s forearm with the unyielding strength of an iron vise.
Another arm swept around her torso, halting her fatal momentum in a split second of terrifying physics.
Dante Moretti pulled Isabella flush against his tailored suit, absorbing the shock entirely with his broad frame.
The suitcase tumbled three steps down, slamming against the polished marble with a thunderous, echoing crash.
Isabella sobbed against Dante’s chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Dante’s jaw set into granite, his dark eyes burning with the quiet, lethal rage that made whole cartels tremble.
He slowly helped Isabella stand upright, ensuring her feet were firmly planted on the carpeted landing.
"Are you hurt?" Dante asked, his voice low, steady, and vibrating with an icy undertone.
"N-no, Don Dante... you saved me... my baby is safe," Isabella stammered through overflowing tears.
Dante gently moved her behind his back, placing himself as an impenetrable shield between the maid and his fiancée.
His palm slammed down onto the polished wooden banister with a crack that sounded like a gunshot.
The entire three-story foyer went dead silent, the armed guards below freezing in their tracks.
Evelyn recoiled slightly, though she quickly masked her shock behind an expression of rehearsed indignation.
"Dante, darling, she was being lazy and disrespectful to me," Evelyn lied smoothly, crossing her slender arms.
"She is carrying a child, Evelyn, and you nearly broke her neck under my roof," Dante whispered, which was far scarier than screaming.
Before Evelyn could weave another excuse, Dante’s sharp eyes shifted downward toward the tumbled suitcase.
The impact against the marble had strained the lock, leaving a gap between the heavy leather lips.
Evelyn noticed Dante’s stare, and the color instantly drained from her perfectly contoured cheeks.
Her manicured hands began to shake uncontrollably, betraying a terror far deeper than the fear of a broken engagement.
"Leave it, Dante," Evelyn pleaded, her voice suddenly cracking into a high, desperate pitch.
Dante did not obey; he never took orders, especially inside his own fortress.
He descended two steps, his polished Oxfords clicking deliberately against the stone.
"DON'T TOUCH THAT BAG!" Evelyn shrieked, lunging forward to grab the leather handle before he could reach it.
Dante caught her wrist mid-air without even looking at her, his grip tightening until she gasped in pain.
"Why are you sweating, Evelyn?" Dante asked, staring directly through her carefully maintained mask.
He shoved her back onto the step, knelt beside the heavy luggage, and seized the brass clasps.
With a sharp twist of his muscular wrists, Dante forced the damaged locks to snap open.
The heavy leather lid fell back, exposing the neatly arranged contents within.
As the lid shifted, a small golden band rolled out, bouncing across the marble before settling beside Dante’s shoe.
Dante stared at the tiny object, his breath catching in his throat as if he had been shot through the lungs.
He picked up the gold ring with trembling fingers, holding it under the golden chandelier light.
Engraved on the inside was an inscription he knew by heart: *Always and Forever, Elena.*
His dead wife’s wedding ring.
The ring that had supposedly dissolved into ash during a fiery car explosion five years ago in the hills of Lake Forest.
Dante’s blood turned to pure liquid nitrogen as he plunged his hand deeper into the hidden compartments of the bag.
Beneath forged passports and stacks of untraceable currency, Dante pulled out a silver-framed photograph.
The picture showed Elena, looking thin and exhausted, sitting beside a little girl with bright green eyes and black wavy hair.
The little girl looked four years old, bearing the unmistakable, unmistakable jawline of the Moretti bloodline.
Dante’s lungs paralyzed; he stared at the face of a child he had been told died in his wife’s womb.
Behind him, Evelyn began retreating up the stairs step by step, desperately looking toward the mansion's exits.
At that exact moment, Isabella stepped closer, her tear-stained eyes locking onto a yellowed envelope protruding from the lining.
She reached out with shaking fingers, recognizing the jagged, slanted ink instantly.
The handwriting belonged to Lucas, her late husband who had supposedly died in the same fiery crash while serving as Dante’s lead driver.
Isabella collapsed to her knees, tearing the paper open and devouring the first three lines.
"Oh God... oh merciful God, Lucas didn't die by accident," Isabella cried out, clutching the letter to her chest.
Dante rose slowly, towering over the grand staircase like a vengeful demon rising from the underworld.
His eyes locked onto Evelyn, whose back had now hit the cold wall of the upstairs landing.
"WHERE THE HELL IS MY DAUGHTER?" Dante roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.
Before Evelyn could utter a lie, a high-pitched vibration hummed from inside the bottom lining of the suitcase.

An encrypted burner phone lit up in the darkness of the leather pocket.
On the glowing screen, a new notification flashed: *The buyer is in position at the docks; deliver the Moretti girl now or the deal is void.*
