Chapter 6 - The Silo of Secrets

The subterranean tunnels beneath the old grain elevator were damp, smelling of rot, forgotten wheat, and industrial oil.
Dante moved through the darkness like a ghost, his suppressed weapon raised, clearing every intersection with lethal precision.
Water dripped from rusted overhead pipes, creating an echoing rhythm that masked the sound of his deliberate footsteps.
He reached the heavy reinforced door marked *Sub-Level Three*, finding the electronic lock smashed and smoking.
Someone had tried to barricade it from the inside, but the master key from Lucas’s lockbox slid smoothly into the manual override.
Dante turned the heavy brass key, feeling the tumblers shift with a solid, satisfying mechanical click.
He kicked the door open with tremendous force, immediately dropping low into a firing stance as the metal slammed back.
Inside the vast concrete chamber, illuminated by a single swinging halogen bulb, two men spun around in utter shock.
They were European mercenaries, heavily armed and wearing tactical vests, guarding a small cot in the corner of the room.
Before either man could level their submachine guns, Dante fired two double-taps in rapid, flawless succession.
Both mercenaries collapsed instantly to the concrete, their weapons clattering away harmlessly across the damp floor.
The room fell into an eerie, suffocating silence, broken only by the hum of the swinging light overhead.
Dante lowered his smoking weapon, his eyes slowly turning toward the shadowy corner where the small cot rested.
Curled under a thin, faded floral blanket was a small child, shivering against the biting subterranean cold.
Dante’s breath caught in his chest, the weapon in his hands suddenly feeling impossibly heavy.
He slowly holstered his gun, dropping to both knees on the filthy concrete floor to make himself appear smaller.
The little girl pulled the blanket down just enough to reveal her face, her eyes wide with terror and innocent curiosity.
They were Elena’s eyes—the exact same emerald green that had haunted Dante’s dreams for five agonizing years.
Her dark, wavy hair fell around her small shoulders in tangled curls, framing a face that was unmistakably Moretti.
"Who are you?" the little girl whispered, her tiny voice trembling like a leaf caught in a storm.
"Are you another bad man from the Senator?" she asked, clutching an old, headless teddy bear to her chest.
Dante felt a hot tear escape his eye, rolling down his scarred cheek as he reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out the silver locket, holding it open so the dim halogen light caught the portrait inside.
"My name is Dante," he choked out, his deep voice cracking with emotion he had kept buried for half a decade.
"I was your mother’s husband... and I am your father, Mia," he whispered, extending his trembling hand forward.
Mia’s eyes locked onto the locket, then darted up to Dante’s face, studying every feature with startling intelligence.
"Mommy told me before she went to sleep in the garden that a man with your eyes would come for me," she said softly.
"She told me my daddy was a king who was fighting monsters, and that he would never stop looking for me," Mia added.
Dante broke completely; the ruthless mafia Don who had brought empires to their knees wept openly before his child.
He crawled forward on his hands and knees, wrapping his powerful arms around the frail, shivering body of his daughter.
Mia wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, burying her face into his wet trench coat, exhaling a long, shuddering sigh.
"You're safe now, my sweet angel," Dante sobbed, kissing the top of her dark head over and over again.
"The monsters are gone, and daddy is taking you home," he promised, standing up with Mia held firmly against his chest.
He wrapped his heavy wool coat around her small frame, shielding her from the sight of the bodies on the floor.
As Dante stepped out of the room, his radio crackled to life with Mateo’s frantic voice.

"Evelyn Vance escaped the mansion cellar—she bribed a corrupt guard and she’s at Pier 42 with a detonator!"
