Chapter 8 - The Dawn of Justice

Twenty-four hours after the bloodbath at Pier 42, the sun rose over Chicago, casting golden light through the Moretti mansion.

The heavy mahogany front doors, once a symbol of Evelyn’s oppressive vanity, were thrown wide open to let the fresh air in.

Inside the grand dining hall, long tables were covered in white linen, laden with warm pastries, fresh fruit, and hot coffee.

Mia sat on a velvet chair, wearing a clean, soft yellow dress, happily coloring pictures with a set of bright crayons.

Dante sat beside her, completely stripped of his armored trench coat, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater.

He watched his daughter with a look of pure adoration, occasionally reaching out to stroke her soft, dark curls.

For the first time in five years, the constant, suffocating tension had vanished from the lines of his rugged face.

Across the table sat Isabella, wearing a comfortable silk dress that Dante’s personal staff had acquired for her that morning.

She held a cup of warm herbal tea, watching Mia color with a soft, peaceful smile resting upon her lips.

Mateo walked into the dining hall, carrying a thick leather dossier under his arm, bowing respectfully to Dante.

"The Senator has signed the full confession, Don Dante," Mateo reported in a low, professional tone.

"All Vance assets, port authorities, and offshore accounts have been transferred completely into the Moretti trust," he added.

"And the Senator himself?" Dante asked, his voice calm, sipping his black espresso without looking up.

"He suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in his holding cell an hour ago; the coroner has already ruled it natural causes," Mateo confirmed.

Dante nodded once, a gesture that closed the bloody chapter of the Vance family’s betrayal forever.

"Burn the dossier, Mateo, and ensure Lucas’s name is completely cleared with the city archives," Dante instructed.

"He will receive a full state funeral with the highest honors of the Moretti family," Dante stated firmly.

"Thank you, Don Dante," Isabella whispered, her eyes shining with deep, everlasting gratitude for her husband’s honor.

Dante turned toward Isabella, sliding an elegant, embossed parchment envelope across the mahogany table toward her.

"Open it, Isabella," Dante requested gently.

Isabella picked up the heavy envelope, breaking the wax seal stamped with the Moretti family crest.

Inside was the deed to a stunning, five-acre private estate in the rolling hills of Oak Brook, fully staffed and secured.

Beneath the deed sat a trust fund document established under her unborn son's name, totaling twenty million dollars.

Isabella gasped, dropping her hands to the table, shaking her head in utter disbelief at the sheer magnitude of the gift.

"Don Dante, I cannot accept this... I only did what Lucas would have wanted me to do," she stammered.

"You saved my daughter’s life, Isabella, and you put a bullet through the serpent who destroyed my wife," Dante said firmly.

"You are not a servant; you are the guardian angel of this household, and your child will never want for anything," he insisted.

Mia suddenly looked up from her coloring book, holding up a drawing of a big house with four smiling figures in the yard.

"Look, Daddy! It’s you, me, Auntie Isabella, and the little baby!" Mia cheered, pointing her crayon at the paper.

Dante smiled, a genuine, warm smile that illuminated his entire face as he looked at the drawing.

"It’s beautiful, Mia," Dante murmured, his heart swelling with a peace he never believed he would experience again.

Isabella reached across the table, taking Dante’s hand in a tight, meaningful squeeze of mutual survival and respect.

"We survived the storm, Don Dante," Isabella whispered softly.

"No, Isabella," Dante replied, looking at his daughter and then toward the future. "We conquered it."
