Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

The rain had turned into a torrential downpour as Dante emerged from the subterranean bunker, carrying Mia tightly against his heart.
His loyal soldiers immediately formed an impenetrable phalanx around him, their rifles pointing outward into the stormy night.
Mateo rushed forward, his face pale with guilt and fury, holding an open umbrella over the little girl.
"I apologize, Don Dante, the guard was a Vance sleeper agent; I personally put a bullet in his head, but she slipped away," Mateo reported.
"Where is Isabella?" Dante demanded, his voice turning deadly cold as he shielded his daughter’s eyes from the rain.
"She’s in the armored Suburban by the main pier gate, but Evelyn was spotted heading toward that exact location!" Mateo warned.
Dante didn’t wait for another word; he broke into a sprint across the flooded asphalt toward the staging area.
At the pier gate, the headlights of the black Suburban cut through the thick sheets of falling rain.
Standing ten yards in front of the vehicle, soaked to the bone and completely unhinged, was Evelyn Vance.
Her expensive dress was torn and covered in mud, her makeup smeared across her face like a terrifying war paint.
In her right hand, she gripped a military-grade electronic detonator wired to the fuel tanks lining the dock perimeter.
Inside the Suburban, Isabella sat safely, but she could see the madness in Evelyn’s eyes through the reinforced glass.
Isabella pushed the heavy door open, stepping out into the freezing rain despite the protests of the guards behind her.
She stood tall, one protective hand resting over her pregnant belly, staring down the woman who had tried to murder her.
"Get back in the car, you stupid maid!" Evelyn screeched, waving the detonator frantically in the air.
"If I don’t inherit the Moretti empire, nobody will! I’ll blow this entire harbor into the sky!" Evelyn screamed.
"You’ve already lost, Evelyn," Isabella shouted back through the howling wind, her voice filled with unshakable authority.
"Lucas’s letter exposed you, the Senator is captured, and Dante has his daughter in his arms right now," Isabella proclaimed.
Evelyn’s head snapped toward the darkness of the pier, where Dante was striding into the glaring headlights.
Dante approached, holding Mia securely in one arm, his other hand casually resting near his side.
Mia looked at Evelyn with wide, recognizing eyes, clinging tighter to her father’s neck in fear.
"That’s the bad lady who locked mommy in the room," Mia whispered into Dante’s ear, pointing a tiny finger.
Hearing those words, Dante’s eyes became completely devoid of anything resembling mercy.
"Evelyn, look at me," Dante said, his voice cutting through the storm with absolute, chilling finality.
Evelyn locked eyes with Dante, seeing the little girl she had spent five years trying to sell into oblivion.
Her finger hovered over the red arming switch of the detonator, her knuckles turning bone white with venomous rage.
"You ruined my life for that dead bitch and her filthy brat!" Evelyn shrieked, preparing to depress the trigger.
Before her thumb could make contact, a single sharp gunshot cracked through the torrential downpour.
Evelyn froze, her eyes widening in absolute shock as she looked down at her own chest.
A clean, small hole blossomed on her dress, right through the center of her heart.
Ten feet away, Isabella lowered the small silver revolver, smoke curling gently from the barrel into the cold rain.
"That was for Lucas," Isabella whispered, her hand steady, her breathing calm despite the violence of the moment.
The detonator slipped from Evelyn’s lifeless fingers, splashing harmlessly into a puddle of rainwater.
The heiress collapsed onto her knees, then fell face-first onto the slick asphalt, her reign of terror extinguished forever.
Dante looked at Isabella, a profound, unspoken respect passing between the mafia Don and the pregnant widow.
He walked forward, stepping over Evelyn’s body without a second glance, stopping right in front of Isabella.
"You protected my family, Isabella," Dante said, handing Mia gently toward her for a brief second of warmth.
Mia looked at the pregnant woman and smiled softly, reaching out to gently touch Isabella’s swollen belly.
"Is there a baby in there?" Mia asked, her innocent voice cutting through the lingering smell of gunpowder.
"Yes, sweetheart," Isabella smiled through fresh tears of relief. "A little baby brother who will never be afraid again."
Dante turned toward his men, who stood in silent reverence around the scene of retribution.

"Clean this mess up," Dante commanded, his voice echoing across the conquered docks.
"The Vance family is erased from Chicago as of tonight. Take us home."
