Chapter 8 - A Hidden Compartment Inside The Old Wooden Box

Damian’s fingers traced the edges of the small wooden jewelry box resting on the top of the bureau.

He remembered little Rosie saying her mother kept the platinum star ring inside this exact box before it vanished.

He examined the bottom of the box, noticing a slight unevenness in the grain of the handcrafted cherry wood.

Pressing a hidden latch near the velvet lining, a secret compartment popped open with a faint, satisfying click.

Inside lay a collection of folded documents, handwritten notes, and a flash drive labeled with a date from three weeks prior.

Damian unfolded the top letter, recognizing Sofia’s careful, looping handwriting addressed directly to him.

“Mr. Vance, if anything happens to me, look at Vivienne Caldwell; she knows about the safe deposit box at Union Bank.”

Damian’s breath caught in his throat as he read the chilling warning penned just forty-eight hours before her sudden death.

Sofia had known someone was hunting her, and she had tried to leave a trail behind for the estate owner to find.
