Several weeks later, the Moretti family traveled back to Chicago to visit the rebuilt site of the old apartment building.
A quiet memorial park now stood where the tragic fire had nearly claimed young Lucia’s life twenty years ago.
Claire stood beside Eleanor near the stone monument, holding her mother’s hand under the autumn afternoon sun.
“I spent so many years wondering why I survived that fire,” Claire whispered softly.
“You survived because you were meant to save our family twice—once from the flames, and once from destruction,” Eleanor smiled.
Vincent walked up behind them, placing a comforting hand on both of their shoulders with a warm, genuine smile.
