Chapter 42 - The Ghost Convoy

The tactical operators did not announce their presence; they moved with the lethal, mechanical efficiency of corporate paramilitaries. Their black tactical rigs bore no flags, only the embossed silver raven crest of Valmont-Suharto Global—the private equity conglomerate that Vanessa had secretly listed as her secondary corporate guarantor in Box 402.
Nathan rolled behind the armored engine block of the disabled fuel truck, his ribs screaming in agony as he shielded Toby against his chest. Bullets pinged mercilessly off the heavy steel plating, sparks raining down into the snowy slush. Toby was wailing, his small face buried into the crook of Nathan’s neck, suffocating on fear and the chemical stench of burning phosphorus.
"Miller!" Nathan screamed through the deafening barrage. "Who are they?"
Miller had dropped behind a reinforced concrete jersey barrier twenty yards away. She fired two controlled double-taps around the corner, taking down an advancing operative before ducking back under a hail of return fire. "Cleaners!" she yelled back, her tactical composure entirely shattered. "Vanessa didn't just borrow money from Valmont! She pledged the genetic assets as collateral on a four-hundred-million-dollar credit default swap! If Harold Caldwell's biological clone dies, the entire Mercer portfolio liquidates to a shell company in Geneva! They aren't here to rescue Vanessa—they're here to harvest the boy!"
Nathan snapped his head around. Eli was still standing completely out in the open, amidst the storm of flying lead and molten steam, as if an invisible kinetic shield surrounded him. The eight-year-old child stared down the barrel of an advancing assault rifle without flinching. His thumb had not slipped off the detonator.
"Eli! Get behind the truck!" Nathan bellowed, lunging forward despite the rounds chewing the ground inches from his boots.
"They can't shoot me, Nathan," Eli said calmly, his voice chillingly flat over the thunder of automatic weapons. "My telemetry is hardwired into their client’s biometric display. If my resting heart rate flatlines, their smart-contracts automatically self-terminate. They need me warm."

A flash grenade detonated ten feet from the helicopter, painting the snow in blinding magnesium white. Nathan was thrown backward against the fuel tank, ears ringing with a high-pitched, deafening squeal. Through the blinding haze, he saw two operators converge on Evelyn. She screamed as a gloved hand caught her by the hair, dragging her toward the rear doors of the center SUV.
"Nathan!" she shrieked, clawing at the frozen asphalt. "The vault key wasn't in Zurich! Vanessa swallowed it! She has it in the secure ward at Saint Jude!"
