Chapter 12 - Box 402

The South Loop Depository was a relic of private banking from the late 1970s—a fortress of granite and unpolished brass buried beneath street level, away from digital grids and federal scrutiny. The clerk behind the bulletproof partition looked at Nathan’s driver's license, then squinted at the paper slip Nathan handed over: *V. Sterling / Box 402 / Access Code: HALLOWAY.*
"Key, sir?" the old clerk asked, his eyes heavy with indifference.
"I don't have it," Nathan said, leaning against the counter, his knuckles white. "Drill it. I'll pay ten times the penalty fee. Do it now."
Twenty minutes later, in a sterile viewing booth that smelled of damp concrete and ozone, the metal lock gave way with a high-pitched metallic shriek. The deposit box was pulled free and placed on the stainless-steel table before him.
Nathan’s fingers trembled as he pulled open the lid.
There were no diamonds, no stacks of laundered currency, no flash drives filled with corporate blackmail. Inside lay a single manila folder, stamped with a faded red seal from an unlicensed neonatal clinic across the state line in Gary, Indiana.
Beneath the folder was a pair of infant socks—knitted wool, stained with drops of dried brown fluid—and a laminated hospital footprint card.
Nathan pulled the card into the harsh fluorescent light.
*Infant Male. Delivered: October 14, 2021. 04:12 AM.*
*Mother: Vanessa Sterling Mercer.*
*Status: Surrendered via Private Broker.*
The date hit Nathan like a physical blow, knocking the air clean out of his lungs. October 14 was precisely two weeks *before* the confrontation at the Mercer estate. Two weeks before Vanessa had put on the silicone belly and taunted young Eli at the top of the marble staircase, daring the child to touch her so she could fling herself down and scream that the heir had murdered her unborn baby.
Nathan staggered back against the cold wall of the booth, his vision tunneling.
She wasn't faking a pregnancy to claim she lost it on the stairs. *She had already given birth.*
The silicone belly wasn't a prop to create an imaginary child; it was a disguise to hide the fact that her real baby was already gone. She had delivered Nathan’s child in secret, handed it over to a private syndicate, and then donned a prosthetic cushion so she could fake a violent miscarriage on his staircase—killing two birds with one stone: framing Eli to disinherit him, while hiding the fact that Nathan’s biological son had been sold into the shadows to settle a debt.

"My God," Nathan choked out into the empty room, tears of boiling rage and horror burning his eyes. "What did you do, Vanessa? What did you do to my child?"
