Chapter 14 - The Sins of the Patriarch

The air in Michael’s covert tactical office smelled of burnt black coffee and overheated server racks. Outside, rain lashed against the second-floor warehouse windows in industrial Pilsen. On the wall-sized digital display, Michael had pinned three decades of financial maps, real estate deeds, and police intelligence reports.

Nathan sat on a folding chair, his face buried in his hands.

"She's telling the truth, Nathan," Michael said quietly, tossing a thick dossier onto the desk. "I dug through your father's personal safety deposits from 1998. The foundry expansion in Ohio? The acquisition of the automated stamping plants? None of that was funded by Chase or Citibank. It was washed through Castiglione front companies out of Montreal."

Nathan looked up, his face pale, eyes bloodshot. "My father built a legacy on a lie. And Vanessa knew?"

"Vanessa was brought in by your father’s old board to clean the books," Michael explained, zooming in on an old surveillance photograph showing a young Vanessa standing beside a silver-haired mob boss named Hector Castiglione. "She didn't just stumble into your life, Nathan. She was planted to make sure the Mercer dividends kept flowing back to the syndicate. But somewhere along the line... she married you. And she got pregnant."

"And Hector wanted the child?"

"The Castigliones don't leave loose ends," Michael said grimly. "When they realized you were auditing the supply chains three years ago—when you started implementing independent ethics boards—they knew they were losing control of Mercer Manufacturing. So they demanded the child as insurance. A Mercer heir raised under their roof, legally entitled to half the empire."

Nathan felt a sickening cold wash through his veins. "So when Vanessa realized she couldn't stop my audit... she delivered the boy in secret, handed him to a safe-house runner, and staged the miscarriage on our stairs to convince Hector the leverage was dead."

"Exactly," Michael nodded. "She ruined Eli's life and her own reputation because being branded a lying, narcissistic monster in a federal prison was safer than telling Hector Castiglione that his golden ticket was still breathing."

"Where is he, Michael?" Nathan stood up, his voice dangerously calm, the terror giving way to an ancient, predatory rage. "Where is my son?"

Michael looked at the screen, clicking a key to open a secure file. "The Gary clinic broker was an intermediary. The child was placed under a sealed private adoption with a family in upstate Michigan. But there's a problem, Nathan."

"What problem?"

"Hector found out two days ago," Michael said, looking Nathan straight in the eye. "Vanessa’s former lawyer leaked the medical audit. A hit team crossed the state border three hours ago. If we don't get to Michigan tonight, your boy won't live to see sunrise."
