Chapter 35 - Blood Protocol

Holding Block Charlie was a stark, windowless concrete cube at the far end of the subterranean complex. Vanessa—or Evelyn, as Nathan now had to force himself to think of her—was seated on a wooden bench against the wall.
Her expensive cashmere coat had been stripped away, replaced by an oversized orange prison jumpsuit that made her frame look shockingly small and fragile. Her hair was tied back with a rubber band, revealing the sharp, patrician contours of her cheekbones and the bruised hollows beneath her eyes. Yet, despite the humiliation of the jumpsuit, she sat with her spine straight, her hands resting calmly on her knees, radiating the cold, untouchable dignity that had drawn Nathan to her the first night they met at the Metropolitan Museum gala.
When the heavy steel door slid open and Nathan stepped inside, she didn't flinch. She slowly raised her dark eyes, studying him with an intensity that made the skin on his neck prickle.
"You look terrible, Nathan," she said quietly. Her voice was steady, without a hint of tremor.
Nathan stood in the center of the room, refusing to sit on the bench across from her. "Evelyn."
A faint, bitter smile touched the corner of her lips. "So Miller gave you the full dossier. How thorough of her. Did she tell you about the car? Did she tell you how Sarah’s ribs sounded when your Aston Martin pinned her against the granite pillar?"
"I wasn't in that car," Nathan said, his voice flat, devoid of anger, drained down to pure stone. "And you know it. Arthur told me on the ice. He was driving. Harold helped him cover it up. You punished me for a crime committed by a man who was already rotten before I was even born."
Evelyn’s eyes flickered, a momentary crack in her porcelain mask. "It didn't matter who was driving, Nathan! You carried the Caldwell name! You spent your summers on yachts in Monaco bought with the insurance payouts from the factories where my father lost his hands! Harold took everything from us! He took Sarah. He took our home. And when I had Eli... he took my son!"
Her voice had risen, the icy composure shattering into raw, venomous fury. She stood up from the bench, taking a step toward him, her chains rattling against the floor.
"Do you know what it’s like to hold your newborn baby for twelve minutes before two men in black suits rip him from your chest and threaten to throw you in a federal penitentiary if you ever speak his name?" she hissed, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "Harold looked at me and said I was a stray dog he had paid to breed. He said Eli was Caldwell blood, and Caldwell blood belongs to the empire."
"So you came back to poison that empire," Nathan said.
"I came back to take what was mine!" she retorted, tears finally spilling over her dark lashes, hot and angry. "I spent five years learning your schedules, your bank codes, your board members' dirty secrets. I became the perfect wife! I cooked your dinners, I smiled at your insufferable society friends, I listened to your endless complaints about a father who gave you the world on a silver platter while my family starved in mill towns!"
"And what about Toby?" Nathan took a step forward, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. "What about the little boy crying for his daddy in a holding cell right now? Arthur put a transmitter in his chest, Evelyn. You let a four-year-old child live with a listening device inside his body just to protect your operation!"
Evelyn stopped. The rage drained from her face, replaced by a sudden, sickening paleness.
"What did you say?" she whispered.
"Don't play dumb," Nathan sneered. "Miller told me. Toby was an illegal adoption from Romania. A spy Arthur planted in our nursery."
"No," Evelyn breathed, shaking her head violently. "No, no, no... Toby wasn't Arthur's plant. Nathan, listen to me! Who told you that? Miller?"
"Yes! And Hayes confirmed it!"
"You fool!" Evelyn lunged forward, grabbing Nathan by the lapels of his torn jacket with desperate, frantic strength. "Julian Hayes didn't work for Harold! Hayes was Arthur's silent partner! Directive Nine isn't a federal investigation—it’s an asset purge! Arthur and Hayes created Directive Nine to seize the Swiss vaults before Harold’s trust could trigger the public audit!"
Nathan grabbed her wrists, trying to pry her hands off him. "Stop lying! The lies are over, Evelyn! You faked a pregnancy! You strapped a silicone belly to your body and pretended to carry my child!"
"Because Arthur was trying to kill Eli!" she screamed in his face, her fingernails digging through his cloth. "I needed everyone looking at my stomach so they wouldn't look at Eli's school records! The Swiss accounts require two Caldwell signatures: the patriarch and the legal guardian of the heir! If Toby has a transmitter in his chest, it wasn't Arthur who put it there, Nathan... it was Hayes! Hayes has been monitoring Harold's house since the day Harold died!"
Before Nathan could process her words, the emergency sirens inside the bunker began to howl—a deafening, oscillating horn that bathed the concrete walls in flashing crimson alarm lights.
The electronic lock on the cell door hissed, followed by the heavy clanking of deadbolts falling into place from the outside.
A digitized voice boomed through the intercom above them:
