Chapter 24 - The Underground Vault

The emergency stairwell beneath the butler's pantry smelled of damp concrete, ozone, and copper.
Nathan moved in a low tactical crouch, his weapon leading every corner, Vanessa half a step behind him with Eli clutched tightly against her hip. The emergency battery-operated backup strips cast a sickly green glow along the subterranean corridor.
At the end of the forty-foot passage sat the reinforced steel door of the Caldwell estate’s primary vault—a room constructed during the Cold War by Nathan’s grandfather and retrofitted three years ago to house the family's off-grid private server mainframe.
The heavy steel door was standing ajar.
Nathan held up a closed fist, halting Vanessa in the shadows of an alcove. His heart hammered in his ears like a trip-hammer. The electronic keypad beside the vault door had been ripped open, its wires spliced into a portable military-grade bypass deck pulsing with amber LED indicators.
From inside the vault came the rhythmic, frantic clatter of mechanical keystrokes, accompanied by the high-pitched hum of high-speed cooling fans running at maximum capacity.
"Someone’s downloading the primary ledger," Nathan whispered, his breath fogging in the chill of the unheated basement.
"It’s not just a ledger, Nathan," Vanessa whispered back, her voice shaking violently as she set Eli down behind a stack of steel storage crates. "It’s the Genesis files. Harold didn't just keep business records in there. He kept the surveillance logs from the clinic where Sarah died. He kept the DNA sequence comparisons that prove Eli is his son—and that Toby and Eli share fifty percent of their genetic markers."
Nathan turned to look at her, the reality hitting him with the force of a high-speed collision. "Toby... Toby knows?"
"Toby was the one who found the files on your home office server two months ago," Vanessa confessed, her eyes wide with agonizing guilt. "That’s why the boy attacked me that afternoon in the garden, Nathan! He wasn't acting out because he hated me. He found the forged adoption records! He thought I was an imposter sent to replace his dead mother and steal his inheritance! When he lunged at me, I fell... and the prosthetic tore open."
Nathan remembered that afternoon with sickening clarity. The sunlight on the patio. Toby’s red-faced screams. Vanessa falling against the marble fountain. The sickening rip of the latex beneath her silk dress as the hollow belly collapsed inward, exposing the cold lie at the center of their marriage.
He had thought Toby was a troubled, violent child. He had sent his own son to a therapist while apologizing to a woman wearing a rubber costume.
"Where is Toby now, Vanessa?" Nathan demanded, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and despair.
"He... he was supposed to stay in the hidden crawlspace behind the wine racks," she stammered. "He has the master keycard."
Before Nathan could reply, a voice drifted out from the vault—not Arthur’s, but younger, sharper, and chillingly familiar.

"Delete the partition tables on drive four," the voice commanded. "And if the kid makes another sound, duct-tape his mouth to the server rack."
