Chapter 19 - The Poisoned Ledger

"What are you talking about, Vanessa?" Nathan stepped into the study, closing the double doors behind them, leaving the boys under Rosa's watchful eye.

Vanessa leaned against the mahogany desk, her breathing jagged. "Hector didn't send those men just to kill the boy, Nathan. Hector is dying. Pancreatic cancer. He has three months to live."

Nathan frowned. "Then why hunt a three-year-old child now?"

"Because of the Mercer Family Trust bylaws your grandfather wrote in 1964!" Vanessa slammed her hand on the desk, her eyes wide with terror. "Your father didn't just borrow money, Nathan. He signed an irrevocable blind trust. If both you and your direct biological descendants die without an adult heir, the control of Mercer Manufacturing reverts completely to the secondary creditor named in the 1964 annex!"

Nathan felt the floor drop out from under him. "The Castiglione front company."

"They don't want a ransom," Vanessa whispered, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "They don't want extortion money. They want the entire corporate infrastructure—the shipping lines, the military manufacturing contracts, the logistics hubs. And the only thing standing between the Castiglione cartel and a multi-billion-dollar legal empire... is you, Eli, and Leo."

The realization struck Nathan like a freight train.

The fake pregnancy. The collapsed belly. The three years of silence. It hadn't been an isolated crime. It was merely the first chess move in a three-decade-long hostile takeover designed to wipe the Mercer bloodline off the face of the earth.

"And Hector isn't waiting for the law," Vanessa choked out. "He knows I'm out of Dwight. He knows you have Leo. He activated the final clause three hours ago."

"What final clause?" Nathan demanded, his voice trembling with fury.

"The insider," Vanessa said, her voice dropping to a horrified whisper. "The person who helped your father hide the debt in 1995. The person who tipped Hector off about Leo's location in Michigan."

Nathan’s mind raced through every board member, every vice president, every family friend. "Who is it, Vanessa? Tell me!"
