Chapter 23 - Cold Mathematics

Behind Arthur, the darkness beyond the shattered French doors erupted into violence.

A bloody, gloved hand shot through the jagged opening, catching Arthur by the back of his tactical vest and yanking him backward with ferocious leverage. Michael, drenched in snow, diesel fuel, and his own blood from a grazing wound along his scalp, drove a serrated tactical knife straight downward toward Arthur’s collarbone.

Arthur shrieked—a high, undignified sound—as the blade caught the ceramic plate beneath his coat. The impact threw his aim wild. The Walther discharged with a deafening *CRACK*, the bullet splintering the antique desk between Nathan and Vanessa.

Eli slipped from Arthur’s grip, tumbling across the hardwood.

"Eli! Run!" Nathan roared.

Nathan didn't hesitate. He crossed the ten feet of space in two explosive strides, diving low beneath the muzzle flash. He tackled Arthur’s midsection, driving the older man hard against the heavy oak sideboard. Crystal decanters shattered overhead, raining scotch and fractured glass across their faces.

Arthur was older, but he fought with the frantic, wiry strength of a man who knew failure meant a shallow grave. He gouged his thumb into Nathan’s left eye socket, driving his knee upward into Nathan’s bruised ribs.

Pain exploded through Nathan’s chest, white-hot and blinding, knocking the wind from his lungs. The pistol was knocked from his hand, skittering across the floor toward the doorway.

Across the room, Vanessa swept Eli into her arms, shielding the boy’s trembling head against her chest as two more armed men in tactical gear burst through the shattered glass doors from the terrace.

"Vanessa! The sub-basement! Go!" Michael bellowed, his combat shotgun barking twice in the enclosed space. The concussive blasts were deafening, the heavy buckshot lifting the first mercenary off his feet and throwing him back into the freezing gale outside.

The second intruder returned fire with an MPX submachine gun, chewing the plaster walls into clouds of white dust. Michael grunted as a round caught him in the shoulder, spinning him behind the shelter of the stone fireplace.

Nathan rolled, catching Arthur by the throat with both hands, slamming his head against the hardwood once, twice. "Who gave you the codes to my perimeter, Arthur? Who else is in this house?!"

Arthur coughed up dark blood, but his lips pulled back over red-stained teeth in a grotesque grin. "You think... you think I’m the only one Harold betrayed? Look at your cameras, Nathan. The boys are already surrounded."

From down the hallway, near the kitchen stairs that led to the children's rooms and the fortified storm cellar, the sharp, distinctive crack of a flashbang grenade echoed through the ventilation shafts.

Vanessa screamed—not for herself, but for Toby, Nathan’s ten-year-old biological son from his first marriage, who had been locked in the panic room behind the pantry.

"Nathan!" Vanessa screamed, clutching Eli as automatic gunfire rattled through the ceiling above them. "They’re not trying to escape! They’re inside the server room!"

Nathan delivered a brutal, sweeping right hook that snapped Arthur’s head back, leaving the lawyer limp and dazed against the shattered oak. Nathan lunged across the floor, scooped up his fallen 9mm, and grabbed Michael by the combat harness, hauling his bleeding security chief upright.

"Can you hold the hall?" Nathan hissed.

Michael spat blood onto the rug, racking the slide of his shotgun with one functional arm. "I’ll paint this corridor red, boss. Get the boys. Burn the server."
