Chapter 14 - Jonathan Faces Aggressive Interrogation At The Local Precinct

While the ambulance transported Noah and Maya to Greenwich Hospital, Jonathan was escorted to the local police precinct for formal interrogation.
He sat at the sterile metal table in the interrogation room, staring blankly at the two-way mirror reflecting his ruined life.
Detective Miller entered the room carrying a thick binder filled with bank statements, forged medical forms, and signed authorization logs.
“Let’s talk about your signature on these residential transfer mandates, Mr. Hawthorne,” Miller said, dropping the file onto the metal table.
“I signed them because my wife assured me the Vermont facility required strict no-contact rules during the initial adjustment phase,” Jonathan defended himself weakly.
“Did you ever call the facility directly to verify your son’s enrollment, Mr. Hawthorne? Did you ever request a single progress report in two weeks?” Miller pressed.
Jonathan swallowed hard, unable to meet the detective’s piercing gaze as the truth weighed heavily on his conscience.
“No... Celeste handled all the administrative arrangements through her corporate assistants,” Jonathan admitted in a barely audible whisper.
“That criminal negligence makes you an active co-conspirator under state child welfare protection laws,” Miller stated flatly, clicking his pen.
