Chapter 9 - The Rats Flee the Ship

Four weeks later. Seattle, Washington.

A cold, unforgiving November drizzle was falling over the prestigious gated community of The Highlands.

Adrian stood on the sidewalk outside the towering wrought-iron gates of his former estate. He wore an old trench coat he had retrieved from a storage unit, the hem frayed and waterlogged from the puddles he had walked through from the bus stop three miles away. His face was gaunt, hollowed out by sleepless nights and cheap liquor; a scrubby, grey-flecked beard covered the jaw that had once graced the pages of *Forbes*.

Inside the gates, three large commercial moving vans were parked in the circular driveway.

Men in blue jumpsuits were methodically carrying out the remnants of his former life: the Italian leather sofas, the modern artwork he had purchased to impress investors, the vintage wine collection from the cellar. A large yellow legal placard was bolted directly onto the stone gateposts:

**SEIZED BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY COURT**

**WESTERN DISTRICT OF WASHINGTON**

**AUCTION SALE PENDING**

A black town car pulled up quietly to the curb beside him.

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. He lunged toward the car, thinking—praying with every shred of his battered, pathetic soul—that Vanessa had realized her mistake, or that Dr. Chen had discovered a legal loophole.

The rear window slid down with a smooth, electric hum.

It was not Vanessa.

It was Marcus Sterling.

Sterling sat in the immaculate leather interior of the vehicle, wearing an overcoat that cost more than Adrian’s entire liquid net worth. He looked at Adrian through the rain not with hatred, but with the mild, passing curiosity one might bestow upon a dead sparrow lying on the asphalt.

"Looking for your furniture, Vance?" Sterling asked coolly.

"Sterling!" Adrian grasped the window frame, his wet fingers leaving dirty streaks on the tinted glass. "Please! You have to listen to me! Olivia manipulated you! She orchestrated this whole thing! The patent filing was a trap! Talk to the bankruptcy judge! If you release just five million from the settlement, I can reorganize the company! I can—"

"The company doesn't exist anymore, Adrian," Sterling interrupted, his voice dropping like an iron portcullis. "Apex Global bought Vance BioTech’s physical assets and lab facilities out of receivership this morning for pennies on the dollar."

Adrian blinked through the rain, his mind refusing to process the words. "You... you bought my company?"

"I bought the real estate," Sterling corrected smoothly. "Dr. Olivia Hart bought the proprietary equipment, the brand registry, and the building leases. She just signed the corporate restructuring decree twenty minutes ago."

Adrian’s knees nearly buckled. "She bought Vance BioTech?!"

"No," Sterling said, a chilling smile touching his lips. "She renamed it. As of nine o'clock this morning, the company is registered as *The Noah Medical Research Institute*. Noah is the primary equity beneficiary. Dr. Hart is the governing chairwoman."

Sterling raised his hand to the front seat. "Roll up the window, driver. The smell of desperation is leaking into the upholstery."

"WAIT!" Adrian slammed his open palms against the glass as the window smoothly rose, sealing him out. "STERLING! WHERE IS SHE?! WHERE IS MY SON?!"

The black sedan pulled away from the curb without a sound, its red taillights cutting through the gray Pacific Northwest fog, leaving Adrian standing alone in the rain, drenched to the bone, screaming into the empty, gated driveway of the palace he had lost.
