Chapter 5 - Cracks in the Facade

The grand ballroom of the Vancouver Convention Centre was a cavern of opulence, illuminated by cascading crystal chandeliers that threw fractured shards of diamond light across hundreds of the world’s most powerful people. Billionaire hedge fund managers in bespoke tuxedos mingled with Nobel laureates in slightly wrinkled tailcoats. Waiters in white gloves moved through the throng carrying silver trays of Dom Pérignon and beluga caviar tartlets.
Adrian Vance stood near the center of the room, basking in the intoxicating warmth of absolute self-importance.
He wore a custom midnight-blue velvet dinner jacket with satin peak lapels. In his breast pocket rested a pocket square worth more than the average teacher’s monthly salary. He held a glass of vintage champagne, gesturing animatedly to a circle of prominent Japanese venture capitalists.
"The CardioShield is not merely an incremental improvement, gentlemen," Adrian proclaimed, his voice booming with rehearsed theatrical confidence. "It is a paradigm shift. We have successfully bonded synthetic cellular matrices directly to living myocardium. By this time next year, heart failure will be treated like a routine outpatient procedure. Vance BioTech is projecting an initial market capitalization of four billion upon FDA fast-track approval."
The Japanese investors nodded politely, murmuring among themselves, though their eyes drifted occasionally toward the stage at the far end of the ballroom, where a massive digital screen bore the crest of the Global Bio-Summit beneath a draped black velvet curtain.
Beside Adrian, Vanessa was practically glowing with triumph.
She wore an emerald-cut diamond necklace that caught every light in the room, her hair styled into an intricate, architectural updo. Her tight, shimmering champagne-gold maternity gown clung dramatically to her pregnant silhouette, ensuring that no one could miss her status as the current lady of the Vance empire. She clutched Adrian’s arm like a trophy, occasionally whispering in his ear with a triumphant, feline smirk whenever another executive looked their way.
"You see, darling?" she whispered, brushing her lips against his cheek. "I told you Vancouver would be magical. Everyone is looking at us. We are the King and Queen of this industry."
Adrian smiled, though a drop of cold sweat trickled down the back of his neck, soaking into his starched Egyptian cotton collar.
Underneath his outward bravado, his stomach was twisting in violent, acid knots.
Just two hours ago, back in their suite, he had received an encrypted text from Dr. Chen: *The final bench-top simulation collapsed again. Thermal instability at 37 degrees Celsius. We have no viable biological demonstration for tomorrow’s technical panel. If anyone asks for the raw telemetry, we are finished.*
Adrian had deleted the message instantly. *It doesn't matter,* he had told himself frantically. *Once the $420 million consortium deal is announced tonight, I’ll have enough cash to buy out a German research team to fix the algorithmic bugs. All I have to do is survive the keynote. The presentation just needs to look brilliant.*
"Mr. Vance!"
A sharp, familiar voice broke through his internal spiral. Adrian turned to see Gregory Ward, the senior biotech correspondent for Bloomberg News, pushing through the crowd with a camera crew in tow.
"Adrian, live on Bloomberg in thirty seconds," Ward said, thrusting a foam-covered microphone toward him. "The whole room is buzzing about tonight’s mystery keynote. Apex Global announced this morning that they are finalizing a historic $420 million seed-and-licensing acquisition—the largest single-asset transaction in Canadian biotech history. Rumor has it the technology is in cellular cardiology. Can you confirm if Vance BioTech is the recipient of the Sterling buyout?"
Adrian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.
*Apex Global? $420 million?!*
He hadn't heard back from Marcus Sterling's office all week, but who else could it possibly be? Vance BioTech was the only firm in North America currently pushing a cardiovascular synthetic matrix into human trials. Sterling was notorious for theatrical, surprise acquisitions. He must have bypassed the standard due diligence channels to orchestrate an explosive public reveal right here at the summit!
Vanessa gasped softly, her fingers tightening around Adrian’s bicep until her manicured nails dug into the velvet fabric. "Adrian! It’s happening! It’s us!"
Adrian straightened his spine. He smoothed his lapels, looking directly into the camera lens with the practiced, magnanimous grin of a conqueror.
"Well, Gregory," Adrian said smoothly, letting out an easy, low laugh. "As you know, non-disclosure agreements prevent me from speaking on specific institutional partnerships before the official master of ceremonies takes the stage. But Vance BioTech has always operated at the bleeding edge of cardiac innovation. Let’s just say that the medical world is about to witness an earthquake tonight, and we are very proud to be the epicenter."
"A bold statement!" Ward grinned. "The announcement begins in five minutes. We’ll be watching!"
Adrian turned back to Vanessa, his eyes blazing with manic, triumphant ecstasy. He pulled her close, kissing her forehead in front of several passing hedge fund managers.
"Four hundred and twenty million," he breathed against her skin. "Do you hear that, Vanessa? We did it. Without that miserable bitch dragging me down, we finally took the throne!"
May you like
Vanessa laughed, her eyes glittering with greed. "I always knew you were a genius, Adrian. She was an idiot to think she could ever survive without you."
