Chapter 4 - The Titan's Handshake

The top floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim in Vancouver commanded an unobstructed view of the dark, majestic waters of Coal Harbour and the snow-dusted peaks of the North Shore mountains.

Inside the private penthouse suite, the only sound was the crackle of a cedar fire burning in the minimalist stone hearth.

Marcus Sterling sat across from Olivia, a crystal tumbler of sparkling mineral water untouched before him. Sterling was fifty-two years old, with silver hair cropped close to a skull that looked like it had been carved out of granite. He was the founder of Apex Global Ventures, a sovereign-tier private equity fund that managed over thirty billion dollars. He was a man who did not smile, did not flatter, and did not invest in promises. He invested in dominance.

Between them lay a black leather portfolio containing the raw clinical data of Project Aethelgard.

Sterling closed the binder with a dull thud. For three agonizing minutes, he simply stared at Olivia.

Olivia sat perfectly still. She wore an impeccably tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, her shoulders squared, her hands clasped lightly over her lap. Her gaze didn't waver. She was no longer the exhausted mother cowering in a kitchen while her husband threatened her with ruin. She was a master of the universe, sitting in judgment of those who sought to share her realm.

"This is impossible, Dr. Hart," Sterling said, his voice deep and gravelly. "If these cellular survival metrics are authentic, you haven't just created an alternative to heart transplants. You've rendered forty percent of current cardiovascular medical devices completely obsolete within eighteen months."

"The metrics are authentic, Mr. Sterling," Olivia answered calmly. "The preclinical human tissue assays were conducted under blind double-protocol at the University of British Columbia's bioscience core. Dr. Arthur Vance supervised the controls himself."

Sterling’s eyes narrowed slightly at the mention of Arthur Vance. "Arthur is a legend. But he's been a ghost for seven years. How did you get him out of retirement?"

"I didn't," she replied smoothly. "He came to me. Because he knew that twenty years of medical research were being choked to death by corporations prioritizing subscription-model treatments over actual cures."

Sterling leaned back, his sharp eyes raking over her. "You were married to Adrian Vance. Vance BioTech is presenting their 'revolutionary' CardioShield prototype at the summit's opening gala on Friday night. Their stock is up fourteen percent on speculation alone. They claim to own the patent on this exact branch of synthetic bio-scaffolding."

A faint, dangerous smile touched Olivia's lips.

"Adrian Vance owns an expired, structurally unstable early-stage draft of my notes," she said, each word ringing with the absolute certainty of an executioner testing the sharpness of an axe. "He has the shell of the car, Mr. Sterling. But I took the engine with me when I walked out the door."

Sterling leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. The faint glimmer of genuine respect broke through his icy demeanor. "He discarded you."

"He made a business miscalculation," she corrected coolly. "He assumed that the intellectual capital of his company resided in his charismatic voice and his stock options, rather than the mind that spent eighteen hours a day synthesizing his compounds. He forced me to sign a severance agreement surrendering my rights to *Vance BioTech* patents."

She paused, opening a second, thinner folder and sliding it across the glass table.

"What he failed to realize," Olivia continued, "is that Project Aethelgard was patented four years prior under my maiden name, Dr. Olivia Hart, through a private trust registered in the Cayman Islands, completely insulated from community marital property. The compounds Vance BioTech is trying to test violate seventeen international utility patents owned exclusively by my trust. The moment Adrian presents his prototype on Friday night, he will be committing willful patent infringement on an international stage."

Sterling picked up the legal addendum, reading through the patent registration dates with practiced efficiency. A low, rumbling chuckle began in his chest, eventually breaking into a full, genuine laugh.

"Brilliant," Sterling murmured. "Absolutely ruthless. You let him dig his own grave, and now you’re going to let him jump into it in front of the entire global investment community."

"I am not interested in petty revenge, Mr. Sterling," Olivia said, her voice dropping into a register of sheer authority. "I am interested in market supremacy. Aethelgard requires four hundred and twenty million dollars to build out global distribution, clear final multi-center trials in Europe and Asia, and erect automated manufacturing hubs in three countries. Apex Global has the capital. I have the cure."

Sterling stood up. He walked to the vast panoramic windows, looking down at the glittering city lights reflecting on the dark ocean water below.

"Four hundred and twenty million is an unprecedented single-round valuation for an independent biotech firm led by a solo founder," he noted, turning back to her.

"It is," Olivia agreed without hesitation. "And when the opening markets react to Friday’s announcement, that valuation will triple before the opening bell on Monday morning. You can either own forty-nine percent of the company that cures heart failure... or you can watch Vanguard and BlackRock write the check next week."

Marcus Sterling looked at the woman sitting before him. He saw no fear, no hesitation—only an apex predator draped in high-end wool.

He extended his right hand.

"Draw up the contracts, Dr. Hart. Apex Global is all in."

Olivia stood, taking his hand in a firm, unyielding grip.

"One condition, Marcus," she added.

"Name it."

"The announcement remains an absolute blackout until the keynote presentation on Friday night. Adrian Vance must believe he is the star of the show until the very second the curtain rises."

May you like

Sterling’s eyes flashed with fierce amusement. "Consider it done."
