Chapter 7 - The Confrontation Behind Velvet Ropes

The private VIP holding lounge behind the main auditorium was insulated by three inches of sound-dampening acoustic glass, but the muffled roar of the global press corps still vibrated through the walls like an approaching thunderstorm.
Olivia stood near the mahogany wet bar, sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea. Marcus Sterling sat on the leather sofa nearby, reviewing the finalized signature pages on an encrypted tablet.
The heavy double doors of the green room burst open with a violent shudder.
"I DEMAND TO SPEAK TO HER!"
Adrian shoved his way past the startled hotel event coordinator, his velvet jacket torn slightly at the left armhole where he had wrenched himself away from the venue staff. Vanessa was right behind him, huffing, clutching her designer purse like a weapon, her cheeks stained with black mascara streaks.
Marcus Sterling didn't even look up from his tablet. He simply raised two fingers.
The two private security guards who had blocked Adrian at the stage stepped inside, their hands resting loosely at their belts, but Olivia raised a single, calm hand.
"Leave them, Vance," Olivia said quietly. "Let them speak. It’s important that closure is executed in broad daylight."
The guards hesitated, then backed up against the reinforced doors, blocking the only exit.
Adrian took three aggressive strides toward her, stopping only when he reached the opposite side of the broad glass coffee table. His chest was heaving; the veins in his neck stood out like thick blue cables.
"What is this, Olivia?!" he choked out, his voice hoarse, trembling between incandescent rage and sheer, suffocating terror. "Aethelgard?! That was my research! We developed that together in Boston! You signed the divorce papers! You signed the severance! You signed away your rights to Vance BioTech intellectual property! You’re committing grand larceny on an international scale! I will sue you into the stone age! I will have the Department of Justice seize every penny of that $420 million!"
Olivia calmly set her teacup down onto its porcelain saucer. The tiny clink was the only sound in the room.
"Sue me for what, Adrian?" she asked, her voice impossibly calm.
"For my company! For my life’s work!"
"Your life's work?" Olivia let out a soft, melodic laugh that made Vanessa flinch. "Adrian, do you even know the molecular weight of the synthetic peptide you tried to synthesize on Tuesday morning?"
Adrian’s mouth opened, then snapped shut like a landed fish.
"You don't, do you?" she continued, stepping around the table until she was standing less than two feet from him. She was wearing four-inch Louboutins; for the first time in their relationship, she was looking directly level into his eyes, not looking up. "You don't know because you never understood the basic organic chemistry. You paid Dr. Chen to replicate my old notebooks, but Chen is a technician, not a visionary. He couldn't figure out why the cell wall ruptured under arterial pressure."
Adrian’s face drained of what little color it had left. "How... how do you know about the arterial pressure failures?"
"Because I designed it to fail," she whispered.
Vanessa gasped, stepping forward, her voice rising into an ear-piercing shriek. "You lunatic! You sabotage his company while I’m carrying his baby?! Do you have any idea what you've done to our family?!"
Olivia turned her head, fixing Vanessa with a stare so intensely frigid that the younger woman involuntarily stepped behind Adrian’s back.
"Our family?" Olivia asked softly. "You stood in my kitchen three months ago, Vanessa. You watched this man strike me across the face in front of our son. You rested your hand on that belly and smiled while he threatened to take Noah away from me and leave us destitute on the street. You wanted his wealth. You wanted his empire. Well, take a good look at your king, little girl. His crown is made of spray-painted cardboard."
"Shut up!" Adrian screamed, his hands balling into fists. "I built Vance BioTech! My name is on the stock exchange! The divorce agreement holds up in court! Clause 12! You surrendered all claims to any technology developed during our marriage!"
"Marcus," Olivia said smoothly, not breaking eye contact with Adrian. "Show him Clause 12."
Marcus Sterling finally set down his tablet. He reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a certified legal copy of the exact divorce decree Adrian had forced her to sign, and slid it across the glass.
"Clause 12, paragraph C, Mr. Vance," Sterling said, his voice dripping with venomous amusement. "Read it out loud. You drafted it using your corporate lawyers, after all."
Adrian’s trembling hands snatched the paper. His bloodshot eyes scanned the dense legal boilerplate until they hit the highlighted sub-clause at the bottom of page fourteen:
*'The signatory, Olivia Hart Vance, hereby relinquishes all present and future equity, royalties, and claims to Vance BioTech and its associated subsidiaries, while simultaneously retaining sole, unfettered, and unassailable ownership of any intellectual property, patents, or provisional filings registered under the Hart Scientific Trust prior to, during, or following the dissolution of marriage, with Vance BioTech assuming full indemnification for any prior unauthorized use thereof.'*
The paper fluttered in Adrian’s hand.
"What... what is this?" he stammered. "The Hart Scientific Trust? That was just a family tax shelter your grandfather set up..."
"It was an intellectual property repository, Adrian," Olivia said, her voice dropping into the tone of a teacher explaining arithmetic to a slow child. "Every single line of code, every molecular formula, every patent filing I ever authored over the last nine years was registered under the Hart Trust before I ever let you see the drafts. I granted Vance BioTech an exclusive, revocable operating license. When you forced me to sign that document—when you hit me and demanded my signature—Clause 12 automatically revoked that license and transferred the full indemnification liability back onto your corporate balance sheet."
She leaned in close, her breath warm against his frozen, paralyzed ear.

"You didn't strip me of my rights, Adrian. You legally released me from the only contract that kept me from destroying you."
