Chapter 6 - The Emerald Queen

The heavy brass chime sounded through the grand ballroom, echoing three distinct times to signal the commencement of the official ceremony.

The low hum of six hundred voices gradually tapered off as the main chandeliers dimmed, casting the sprawling hall into dramatic, expectant darkness. Only the brilliant, focused beams of overhead spotlights illuminated the stage, where the podium stood empty beneath the high-definition LED displays.

Adrian and Vanessa moved toward the front row of VIP banquettes, sliding into their plush velvet seats with the smug, easy entitlement of royalty claiming their thrones. Adrian casually leaned back, resting his arm across the back of the settee, his fingers drumming rhythmically against the upholstery. He reached down, picking up a fresh flute of Cristal from the low cocktail table.

At the center of the stage, the master of ceremonies—Sir Alistair Finch, a venerable British knight and chairman of the International Bioethics Council—stepped up to the microphone. The room fell into an absolute, breathless hush.

"Honored guests, prime ministers, colleagues, and titans of industry," Finch began, his cultured, resonant voice carrying effortlessly through the state-of-the-art acoustic system. "Every few decades, humanity encounters a singular intellect whose work does not merely advance medicine, but fundamentally rewrites the rules of what is possible. For the past twenty-four months, speculation has run rampant concerning the mysterious 'Aethelgard Protocol'—a breakthrough that reverses ischemic cardiac scarring, restoring cellular function to dead tissue without the need for mechanical intervention."

Adrian smiled broadly, lifting his champagne glass toward a group of European investors seated across the aisle. The investors raised their glasses in return, assuming, as Adrian did, that Finch was describing the Vance BioTech platform.

"Tonight," Finch continued, his tone swelling with genuine reverence, "we are not merely celebrating a scientific paper. We are witnessing the execution of an agreement that will deploy this miraculous cure to every continent on earth. Under the backing of Apex Global Ventures, led by Marcus Sterling, we are proud to announce the historic, unprecedented acquisition and licensing partnership valued at four hundred and twenty million dollars!"

The ballroom erupted into deafening, thunderous applause. Palms smacked together; high-ranking diplomats cheered. Adrian’s chest swelled so fiercely he felt the buttons on his waistcoat strain. He prepared to stand, already rehearsing his opening quip about scientific perseverance.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Finch called out over the roar of the crowd, his arm sweeping dramatically toward the stage right wings. "Please rise and give your utmost honor to the sole founder, chief scientific officer, and patent holder of Project Aethelgard... *Dr. Olivia Hart!*"

The black velvet curtains parted with a soft, mechanical hiss.

Adrian’s smile froze.

The glass of Cristal slipped from his fingers.

The delicate crystal shattered against the hard parquet floor with a sharp, violent crash, spraying vintage champagne and razor-thin glass shards across the polished leather of his Bruno Magli shoes. He didn't feel the liquid soak through his socks. He didn't hear the gasps of the people seated next to him.

Because stepping out from behind the heavy velvet curtain was his ex-wife.

The breath was violently sucked out of Adrian’s lungs.

Olivia Hart did not look like the woman who had spent nine years in oversized cardigans, wiping baby purees from kitchen counters, or quietly correcting his spelling errors in patent drafts.

She wore an off-the-shoulder, floor-length gown of heavy, emerald-green silk that clung to her silhouette with regal perfection, falling into an immaculate, dramatic train behind her. Her long, dark hair was swept into a sleek, sculptural chignon that accentuated the flawless, aristocratic line of her neck and jaw. The faint yellow bruise that had once marked her skin was gone; in its place was a skin of incandescent, porcelain clarity. Around her throat rested a simple, blinding collar of platinum and white diamonds—a personal gift from the Apex Global vault.

She walked with the serene, effortless grace of an empress inspecting her troops. Beside her, walking half a step behind in a sign of unmistakable deference, was Marcus Sterling himself.

The entire ballroom—presidents of pharmaceutical giants, Swiss bankers, Nobel laureates—rose to their feet as one, bursting into a sustained, thunderous standing ovation that shook the very foundations of the building.

"OLIVIA?!"

The word tore out of Adrian’s throat, high-pitched and ragged, completely breaking his cultivated persona. He bolted to his feet, knocking his heavy oak chair backward with a loud clatter.

"Adrian, what is happening?!" Vanessa shrieked beside him, her face completely drained of color, her foundation looking suddenly chalky and grotesque under the ambient stage lighting. "Why is she up there?! Why is her name on the screen?!"

Across the massive LED wall behind the podium, letters ten feet high blazed in brilliant, luminescent gold:

**APEX GLOBAL VENTURES & DR. OLIVIA HART**

**PROJECT AETHELGARD: $420,000,000 PARTNERSHIP**

"THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!" Adrian roared, completely unhinged, his eyes bulging as he stepped over the broken glass. "THAT IS MY PATENT! SHE STOLE MY RESEARCH! OLIVIA!"

He shoved past an elderly German ambassador, lunging toward the foot of the stage stairs. His face was twisted into a mask of feral, furious disbelief. "SECURITY! STOP HER! SHE'S AN IMPOSTOR! THAT'S MY WIFE!"

Before his foot could touch the first carpeted riser, two immense men in tailored charcoal suits with discrete earpieces materialized directly in front of him.

They were not standard hotel security; they were Marcus Sterling’s private tactical security detail.

The first guard, a former British SAS operator named Vance (no relation), stepped forward, placing a massive, open palm firmly against Adrian’s chest. The impact hit Adrian like an iron girder, driving him back three paces until he collided heavily against an empty banquet table.

"Step back, sir," the guard said, his voice flat, dead, and utterly terrifying. "Another step toward Dr. Hart, and you will be removed from this facility in handcuffs."

"Do you know who I am?!" Adrian spat, his tie crooked, his hair falling into his eyes as several high-profile attendees turned to stare at him in sheer disgust. "I am Adrian Vance! Vance BioTech! She is a fraud! She's my ex-wife! She was an unemployed housewife ninety days ago!"

Up on the stage, the applause slowly began to subside as Olivia approached the clear acrylic podium.

She did not flinch at the shouting. She did not look startled.

Slowly, deliberately, Dr. Olivia Hart leaned forward. She adjusted the slender chrome gooseneck of the microphone. Her eyes swept across the six hundred elite guests, pausing for half a beat as they landed directly on Adrian, who was panting, disheveled, and held back by security guards at the bottom of the steps.

Her expression was not angry. It was something far worse: complete, devastating indifference.

"Thank you, Sir Alistair. Thank you, Marcus," Olivia’s voice rang through the speakers, deep, velvety, and resonant, commanding the room with the effortless authority of an absolute monarch.

She looked straight down the barrel of the central media camera, her gaze cutting through the lens to every living room and trading floor in North America.

"Ten years ago, a man told me that a shadow cannot exist without the light that casts it," she said softly, a ghost of an amused, lethal smile playing at the corners of her lips.

The room hung on every single syllable.

"He was wrong," Olivia stated clearly. "He mistook the sun for a lightbulb that he could switch on and off at his convenience. He forgot that when you cast out the person who built the foundation, the house doesn't belong to you anymore."

She shifted her gaze, locking her emerald-sharp eyes dead into Adrian’s horrified, pale face.

May you like

"You didn't just lose a wife, Adrian," she said, her voice dropping into an icy, crystalline whisper that echoed in every corner of the silent hall. "You threw away the architect of your soul. And now... you’re going to watch me build the world without you."
