Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail of Ruin

The dawn over Vancouver did not bring warmth; it brought a cold, slate-grey fog that rolled off the Pacific, blanketing the skyscrapers in a shroud of damp misery.
Inside the luxury suite at the Pan Pacific Hotel, the television was blaring at maximum volume.
*"...a historic implosion on the NASDAQ this morning as trading opened for Vance BioTech,"* the CNBC anchor announced, her face grim against the scrolling red ticker at the bottom of the screen. *"Trading of shares under ticker VBIO has been halted following an emergency filing by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Dr. Olivia Hart, backed by Apex Global’s $420 million consortium, has filed a comprehensive federal injunction citing industrial espionage, patent fraud, and willful copyright infringement against CEO Adrian Vance..."*
Adrian was sitting on the edge of the unmade king-sized bed, still wearing his rumpled, stained tuxedo pants from the night before. His shirt was unbuttoned to the navel, his hair greasy and wild.
Empty miniature liquor bottles from the mini-bar littered the nightstand like spent brass casings.
His personal cell phone was ringing constantly. A dull, relentless vibration against the glass nightstand:
*DR. CHEN (14 MISSED CALLS)*
*BOARD MEMBER STERLING-SMITH (22 MISSED CALLS)*
*CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER (31 MISSED CALLS)*
*FEDERAL SECURITIES INVESTIGATOR (2 MISSED CALLS)*
"Turn it off," Adrian croaked, his voice raw. "Turn that damn box off!"
Vanessa didn't turn it off.
She was standing across the room by the open closet, furiously throwing designer dresses, silk blouses, and luxury leather handbags into three massive Louis Vuitton suitcases. She was wearing sweatpants, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, completely devoid of the immaculate glamour she had flaunted just twelve hours earlier.
"What are you doing?!" Adrian demanded, stumbling to his feet, swaying slightly as the room spun around him. "Vanessa! Stop packing! We need to call my crisis management team! We need to issue a press release denying the claims! We can counter-sue!"
Vanessa zipped the largest suitcase shut with a violent, screeching yank. She turned on him, her eyes wide, wild, and blazing with pure, unadulterated venom.
"Are you completely insane, Adrian?!" she yelled, her voice bouncing off the high ceilings. "Did you not see the news?! The SEC froze the corporate accounts! The FBI executed a search warrant on the Seattle headquarters forty minutes ago! They are seizing the servers! My father just called me—he said if I don't get out of this hotel room in ten minutes, the US Marshals are going to name me as an unindicted co-conspirator for signing off on those fraudulent corporate expense filings!"
"Your father?!" Adrian reached out, grabbing her forearm. "Your father promised to back me! He promised city funding for the manufacturing plant!"
"My father is an elected official who wants to keep his seat, you idiot!" she shrieked, wrenching her arm from his grasp with such force that Adrian stumbled into the luggage rack. "He's not going to prison for a fraud who built a house of cards on his ex-wife’s homework!"
"I loved you!" Adrian pleaded, his voice breaking into a pathetic, desperate whine that made him look completely unrecognizable. "I gave you everything! I threw Olivia out for you! I put that ring on your finger! You are carrying my son!"
Vanessa stopped moving.
She stood beside her suitcases, looking down at him. A slow, cruel, terrifying smile spread across her lips—a smile that made the cold blood in Adrian's veins turn to ice.
"Your son?" she said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
Adrian froze. "What... what did you say?"
Vanessa let out a short, harsh bark of laughter. "Adrian, you spent eighteen hours a day pretending to be a CEO, screaming at scientists, and drinking yourself to sleep on Macallan. Did you really think you were the only man who visited the executive suite after hours?"
The silence that followed was so absolute, Adrian could hear the hum of the air conditioning unit through the ceiling vents.
"Whose... whose is it?" he whispered, his soul cracking down the middle.
"Does it matter?" Vanessa shrugged, hoisting the strap of her Birkin bag over her shoulder. "Let’s just say he's an associate partner at a private equity firm that actually has real assets. A man who knows how to read a financial statement. Keep the ring, Adrian. It's a lab-grown synthetic anyway; I had it appraised last week."
She didn't look back. She grabbed the handles of her rolling suitcases, kicked the door open, and walked out into the corridor.
The latch clicked shut behind her.
Adrian fell to his knees on the carpet. The television continued to drone in the background:
*"...analysts estimate Vance BioTech’s liabilities exceed one hundred and eighty million dollars, with personal indemnification clauses leaving CEO Adrian Vance personally liable for damages. Foreclosure proceedings have already been initiated on his multi-million-dollar Seattle estate..."*
May you like
Adrian Vance covered his ears with both hands, curled into a fetal position on the floor of the hotel room, and began to weep like an abandoned child.
