Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Deceit

The metallic click of the steel handcuffs locking around Richard’s wrists sounded like the closing of a prison cell door.
Richard screamed in fury as an officer forced his bruised arms behind his back, jarring his broken ribs.
“Get your hands off me, you peasant!” Richard spat, thrashing wildly against the officer’s unyielding grip.
“I pay your salaries! I own the district attorney! You will all be walking beats in the ghetto by tomorrow!”
Evelyn lunged toward the officers, shrieking like a banshee, her muddy hands clawing at their tactical vests.
“Let him go! Do you know who we are? We are the foundation of this city!”
“Ma'am, step back immediately or you will be tased and charged with assaulting an officer,” a female sergeant warned.
Evelyn refused to stop, slapping wildly at the sergeant’s radio until two officers tackled her to the stone patio.
Within seconds, Evelyn was pinned flat on her stomach, her pearl necklace snapping and scattering beads across the tiles.
Cold steel cuffs clamped tightly over her manicured wrists, extinguishing the last remnants of her high-society illusion.
The thirty wealthy guests stood frozen in absolute terror as officers moved methodically through the terrace.
Every single smartphone was placed into heavy brown evidence envelopes and sealed with red tamper-evident tape.
One guest, a wealthy hedge-fund manager, tried to smash his iPhone beneath his Italian leather shoe.
An officer seized his arm instantly, slamming him against the cedar pillar and cuffing him on the spot.
“Tampering with evidence in an ongoing felony investigation,” Captain Vance announced to the horrified room.
“Does anyone else wish to join him in holding cells downtown?”
Total, suffocating silence fell over the aristocrats, who meekly handed over their expensive phones without another word.
Meanwhile, a forensic technician knelt beside the wooden pillar, carefully collecting the discarded red silk ribbon.
She dusted the smooth wood for fingerprints, while another technician took high-resolution macro photographs of the soup.
They swabbed the splattered cream from the floor, preserving every trace of biological and physical evidence.
Eleanor walked over to the patio table where Richard’s leather briefcase had been knocked to the floor during the brawl.
The latch had popped open on impact, spilling several thick stacks of legal documents across the stone tiles.
Eleanor knelt down, picking up the top document with a cold, knowing smirk spreading across her lips.
The title stamped in bold black ink read: *Irrevocable Power of Attorney and Asset Liquidation Authorization.*
Attached to the back was a pen with a built-in miniature stylus, along with a signature page marked with yellow flags.
“Look at this, Captain Vance,” Eleanor said, handing the documents directly to the lead detective.
Vance scanned the paperwork, his eyes widening at the predatory cruelty detailed within the fine print.
“This document strips Toby of every share, every trust fund, and every property inherited from his father.”
“And it transfers full liquidating authority directly to Richard Ashford’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.”
Richard, pinned against the cruiser’s hood, watched the documents being bagged with eyes full of utter despair.
His entire scheme, months in the making, had been completely laid bare in front of local law enforcement.
He had not just committed battery; he had orchestrated an armed corporate extortion plot.
Eleanor walked toward the cruiser, stopping just inches from Richard’s defeated, trembling form.
“Julian knew you were a leech, Richard,” Eleanor whispered, her voice colder than the winter winds.
“He left you out of the will because he knew you would destroy everything he built.”

“You thought you could break my son because he has his father’s gentle heart.”
“You forgot that he also has his mother’s blood.”
