Chapter 5 - The Arrival of Law and Order

Within four agonizing minutes, the distant wail of multiple emergency sirens shattered the quiet afternoon air.

The shrill sirens echoed off the surrounding hills, multiplying in intensity until they sounded like an approaching army.

Six black-and-white police cruisers, followed by two unmarked tactical SUVs and an ambulance, roared up the drive.

The tires threw gravel into the air as the vehicles formed an impenetrable blockade across the massive front gates.

Uniformed officers spilled out with hands resting securely on their sidearms, their expressions grim and alert.

Leading them was Captain Thomas Vance, a veteran detective whose integrity could never be purchased by old money.

Vance had served alongside Julian Ashford on numerous charitable foundations and knew the family intimately.

He stepped onto the bloodstained, soup-slick terrace, his sharp gray eyes instantly assessing the chaotic scene.

He saw the shattered banquet tables, the pooling champagne, and the blood smudges staining the marble tiles.

He saw Richard Ashford leaning against the rail, bleeding from his broken nose and clutching his fractured ribs.

He saw Evelyn looking like a feral creature dragged from a swamp, sobbing hysterically near the rose garden.

And then he saw young Toby Ashford, wrapped in his mother’s coat, shivering violently under a blanket of congealed soup.

“Captain Vance!” Richard bellowed, attempting to summon his usual pompous, untouchable authority.

“Thank god you are here! Arrest this woman immediately! Eleanor has completely lost her mind!”

Richard stumbled forward, pointing a trembling, accusing finger at Eleanor.

“She broke into my home, attacked my wife, broke my nose, and destroyed thousands of dollars of private property!”

Captain Vance did not even look at Richard’s outstretched hand.

The captain walked straight past the battered aristocrat and knelt directly in front of the shivering teenager.

“Toby, son, can you hear me?” Vance asked gently, his gruff voice softening with genuine concern.

Toby nodded weakly, his teeth chattering so hard he could barely articulate words.

“My… my uncle tied me up, Captain,” Toby whispered, holding up his raw, bleeding wrists.

The deep, purple ligature marks left by the crimson silk ribbon were swollen, angry, and undeniably fresh.

Vance reached out, his gloved fingers inspecting the deep grooves cut into the boy’s young skin.

A dark, dangerous fury settled over the veteran detective’s weathered features.

Two paramedics rushed forward with emergency medical kits and a thermal foil blanket.

They wrapped Toby securely, immediately checking his vitals, pupils, and assessing the swelling along his ribs.

“He has severe contusions across his torso, defensive bruising on his forearms, and signs of mild shock,” the paramedic announced loudly.

Vance stood up slowly, turning around to face the gathered assembly of trembling socialites.

“Who tied this boy to that pillar?” Vance demanded, his voice slicing through the afternoon air like a cold blade.

Evelyn stepped forward, her voice shrill and desperate.

“It was a joke! A harmless family tradition! We were merely teasing him, Captain!”

“Teasing?” Eleanor interrupted, her voice burning with icy, venomous contempt.

“You beat my son until his lip burst, tied him like an animal for slaughter, and poured cold slop over his head!”

“That is not a tradition, Evelyn. That is torture.”

Captain Vance turned to his officers with an unwavering, merciless expression.

“Confiscate every single mobile device, camera, and recording tablet on this property right now.”

A wave of collective panic rippled through the gathered guests as officers moved in with evidence bags.

“You cannot do this! This is private property! I am Richard Ashford!” the uncle screamed in absolute outrage.

“Richard Ashford,” Vance said, stepping within inches of the man’s bleeding, ruined face.

“You have the right to remain silent.”

“Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

“Handcuff him.”
