Chapter 3 - Blood and Betrayal

Eleanor gently lowered Toby onto a plush wicker lounge chair beneath the covered portico.
She wiped the congealed soup from his forehead with the hem of her jacket, her touch infinitely tender.
His skin was ice-cold, his lips a frightening shade of pale blue from exposure and absolute emotional shock.
“Did they touch you anywhere else, Toby?” Eleanor demanded softly, checking his neck and ribs for deeper trauma.
“My… my ribs hurt, Mom,” Toby choked out between shivering gasps.
“Uncle Richard kicked me twice in the study before dragging me out here to the pillar.”
Eleanor’s jaw clenched so tightly that a muscle jumped beneath her fair, sun-kissed skin.
Every piece of the monstrous puzzle was beginning to lock violently into place in her brilliant mind.
Six months earlier, her beloved husband, Julian Ashford, had passed away in a tragic, mysterious private plane crash.
Julian had been the sole visionary architect of the multi-billion-dollar Ashford Aerospace Logistics Empire.
Richard had always been the parasite, an elder brother cursed with boundless greed and nonexistent business acumen.
Julian’s final will had explicitly bypassed Richard entirely, bequeathing sixty percent of all corporate assets to Toby.
Julian had known his brother was drowning in catastrophic gambling debts across illegal overseas casinos.
Richard had secretly borrowed tens of millions of dollars from violent, unforgiving loan sharks in Macau and London.
With the corporate handover scheduled for Toby’s twentieth birthday in just three weeks, Richard’s time was running out.
The creditors were threatening to liquidate Richard’s lifestyle, his mansion, and perhaps his very kneecaps.
The only way Richard could escape total annihilation was to force Toby to sign a voluntary power of attorney waiver.
Such a document would transfer total administrative and financial control of the Ashford trust straight into Richard’s hands.
Eleanor had been summoned away this morning on what was supposedly an urgent regulatory audit at their Chicago facility.
It had been a deliberate, orchestrated diversion designed by Richard’s corrupt confederates to leave Toby unprotected.
They had lured Toby to this lavish family gathering under the pretext of an intimate memorial luncheon for his late father.
The moment Toby stepped through the gates, the trap had snapped shut with sickening, calculated brutality.
Richard and Evelyn had cornered the boy in the library, demanding his signature on a thick legal contract.
When Toby refused to dishonor his father’s final wishes, the violence had begun behind locked doors.
To break his spirit completely, Richard had ordered him dragged onto the terrace before thirty extended family members.
The family members were all co-conspirators, promised lucrative shares of the stolen empire if they helped crush the boy.
They intended to film his absolute psychological destruction, threatening to release the footage if he ever spoke out.
They thought a terrified nineteen-year-old would crumble under public shame and beg for mercy.
They believed Eleanor was grounded at O'Hare International Airport, hundreds of miles away from her son.
They had underestimated Eleanor’s intuition, which had warned her the moment the suspicious audit summons arrived.
She had chartered an emergency private jet the second her suspicions flared, racing back against the ticking clock.
She looked back down at her son, seeing Julian’s kind, honest eyes reflecting through the boy’s tears.
“He wanted me to beg, Mom,” Toby whispered, his hands clutching hers with bone-crushing intensity.
“He said if I didn't sign, they would put you in a psychiatric asylum and leave me on the streets.”
Eleanor leaned down, pressing her warm forehead against his cold, battered temple.
“You will never bow to these cowards again, Toby,” she promised, her voice chillingly calm.

“They wanted a war for your father’s legacy.”
“Now, I am going to bring the entire world crashing down upon their heads.”
