Chapter 1 - The Feast of Monsters

The afternoon sun cast a sickening golden glow over the immaculate manicured lawn of the Ashford estate.

Crystal flutes clinked softly as laughter rippled through the gathered crowd of high-society elites.

Scented breezes carried the aroma of roasted truffles, aged wine, and freshly cut white roses across the marble terrace.

Beneath the glittering surface of wealth and prestige, an unspeakable cruelty was unfolding in plain sight.

Nineteen-year-old Toby Ashford stood bound against the heavy carved cedar pillar of the mansion’s veranda.

His hands were pulled tightly behind the rough wood, lashed securely with a thick crimson silk ribbon.

The rough grain of the timber bit viciously into his shoulder blades with every ragged breath he drew.

His knuckles had long turned ghostly white from the relentless lack of blood circulation.

He kept his gaze fixed downward upon the polished stone tiles, praying the ground might open up and swallow him whole.

Standing directly before him was his father’s older brother, Richard Ashford, dressed in a tailored three-piece navy suit.

Richard adjusted his diamond-encrusted cufflinks with a sneer of utter contempt curling across his thin lips.

“Look at me when I am speaking to you, you worthless little bastard,” Richard snarled in a low, poisonous tone.

Toby did not move, his trembling lips pressed together in a desperate attempt to swallow his agony.

Without a second of hesitation, Richard drew back his heavy right hand and struck Toby brutally across the cheek.

The resounding crack echoed sharply off the limestone facade of the grand terrace.

Toby’s head snapped violently to the left, a shockwave of fiery pain exploding behind his temples.

A thin trickle of crimson blood split his bottom lip and dripped slowly down his trembling chin.

Before the boy could even blink back the hot tears blinding his vision, another figure stepped into the light.

His aunt Evelyn, draped in emerald silk and dripping in pearls, glided forward with venom flashing in her eyes.

Her manicured palm cracked mercilessly across Toby’s opposite cheek, sending his senses spinning into a haze.

“That is for disrespecting your elders,” Evelyn hissed, her voice dripping with sadistic theatricality.

The surrounding circle of wealthy relatives and distinguished guests did not flinch, intervene, or call for help.

Instead, a chorus of cruel, mocking laughter erupted from the silk-and-linen-clad onlookers.

Multiple socialites raised their gold-plated smartphones into the air, eagerly recording every second of the boy’s suffering.

They were treating the brutal public humiliation of an orphaned teenager like high-class cocktail entertainment.

Richard gestured grandly toward a silver serving tray resting on a nearby buffet table.

Resting upon the linen cloth was an oversized porcelain terrine filled to the brim with chilled, thick vichyssoise soup.

“Pour that slop right over his arrogant head, Evelyn,” Richard ordered with a triumphant bark of laughter.

Evelyn eagerly lifted the heavy, icy porcelain bowl with both hands and stepped directly in front of the bound boy.

“Let us see if this cools your fiery pride, you ungrateful wretch,” she sneered.

With a deliberate, theatrical motion, she upturned the entire vessel directly over Toby’s dark brown hair.

The greasy, frigid soup splashed violently across his scalp, plastering his hair flat against his forehead.

Thick, cold cream cascaded into his eyelashes, streamed into his bleeding mouth, and soaked through his collar.

The pristine white linen of his shirt turned into a repulsive, heavy, sodden mess clinging tightly to his shivering chest.

Toby closed his eyes, his entire body convulsing with uncontrollable shivers of pure degradation and helplessness.

The roaring laughter of thirty aristocratic spectators swelled to a deafening crescendo of aristocratic mockery.

They pointed their fingers, shook their heads in theatrical disgust, and zoomed their phone lenses into his crying face.

Toby was utterly trapped, stripped of every shred of human dignity in front of the people who shared his blood.

He wished with all his breaking heart that his father were still alive to rescue him from this living hell.

He felt the icy broth trickling down his spine like frozen venom, chilling his will to live.

Richard stepped closer, tapping Toby’s drenched chin with the polished silver tip of his walking cane.

“You are nothing without your father, Toby, and you will sign those inheritance waivers before sundown,” Richard whispered.

Toby remained silent, his teeth chattering uncontrollably as the crowd continued to applaud his absolute ruin.

The humiliation was complete, calculated, and broadcast live to private social media feeds across the city.

The predators believed they had finally broken the boy beyond repair.

They had forgotten that an injured cub is always backed by something infinitely more dangerous.

And that danger was already hurtling toward the front gates at eighty miles an hour.
