Chapter 6 - The Spider's Web

The realization hung between them like a toxic fog. Two broken souls, brought together by blood, betrayal, and a web of lies spun by New York’s most untouchable elites.

"Arthur Hastings knew," Elena said suddenly, sitting up straight. "When I examined him downstairs, his symptoms weren't just organophosphate poisoning. They were identical to the clinical profiles of the three patients murdered in my hospital. It's the XR-9 derivative."

"Arthur was my father’s closest confidant," Alexander realized, his mind racing through corporate documents and board meetings. "Arthur called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning. He told me he had discovered financial irregularities in the Sterling-Blackwell merger. He was going to expose them."

"Which is why Victoria brought those truffles tonight," Elena concluded grimly. "She wasn't just a spoiled heiress throwing a tantrum. She was the courier."

A sudden knock shattered the silence of the suite.

Briggs entered, his face grim. "Sir, we have a problem. Marcus Blackwell slipped out through the service tunnels during the chaos of the medical helicopter landing. His car just left the estate gates."

"Did you track him?" Alexander demanded, rising to his full height.

"His vehicle is heading toward the private airfield in Teterboro," Briggs reported. "And sir... Victoria Sterling is in the passenger seat."

Elena stood up, shedding the cashmere robe to reveal the dark tactical clothes she kept hidden in her locker. "They're running. If Blackwell reaches his private jet, he will cross international waters to a non-extradition zone. And the encryption keys to my father's research—the proof of both your father's murder and mine—will be wiped from his domestic servers."

Alexander looked at her, his eyes blazing with admiration and dangerous intent. "Briggs, prep the helicopter. And bring out the vault armaments."

Briggs grinned a wolfish grin. "Right away, Mr. Vance."

Alexander turned to Elena, walking over to an antique oak armoire in the corner of his bedroom. He unlocked a biometric scanner hidden behind a false panel. The doors slid back, revealing a rack of tactical gear and specialized equipment.

"I spent six years in the Naval Special Warfare Command before my father pulled me back to run this company, Elena," Alexander said calmly, pulling on a black Kevlar vest and checking the slide of a customized Sig Sauer P320. "If Blackwell thinks he can kill my father, frame my family, and touch the woman who just saved Arthur Hastings' life... he has severely underestimated the Vance family."

Elena looked at the gear. She reached into the compartment, retrieving a military trauma kit, trauma shears, and an automated defibrillator.

"I'm a doctor, Alexander. I save lives," she said, her voice steady.

Alexander handed her a compact ceramic sidearm. "Tonight, Doctor, you do both."
