Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Heiress

The whisper was faint, but in the echoing silence of the ballroom, Alexander’s sharp ears caught every syllable.
*Dr. Elena Bennett.*
The name detonated like a depth charge in Alexander’s memory. Two years ago, the medical world had been rocked by the sudden disgrace and disappearance of Dr. Elena Bennett—the youngest Chief of Trauma and Neuro-Critical Care in the history of Johns Hopkins, a decorated military surgeon who had saved hundreds of soldiers in active warzones. She had been accused of fatal medical malpractice, stripped of her license, and chased out of New York under the cloud of a criminal investigation.
And she was sitting on his marble floor, her fingers keeping Arthur Hastings alive.
The heavy sound of approaching sirens finally cut through the estate grounds. Private medical choppers had managed to navigate around the flooded bridge, landing on the south lawn. Paramilitary trauma medics poured into the ballroom carrying an advanced life-support stretcher.
"Transferring patient," Elena barked as the lead medic arrived. "Tracheostomy secured with makeshift 8mm lumen. Suspected acute poisoning via muscarinic agonist. Administer two milligrams of Atropine IV immediately and monitor for bronchial hypersecretion."
The flight doctor blinked, utterly stunned by the maid's diagnosis, but he instinctively nodded. "Understood, Doctor! Moving him now!"
As Hastings was rolled toward the helicopter, the ballroom erupted into a frenzy of murmuring.
Victoria Sterling, desperate to regain control of the narrative, pushed past the security perimeter. Her eyes burned with calculated malice.
"She tried to assassinate him!" Victoria screamed, pointing dramatically at Elena’s blood-stained apron. "Can't you all see? Arthur Hastings collapsed because of her! She was serving the champagne at his table! And then she slit his throat to pretend she was saving him! Alexander, call the police! She’s an unlicensed lunatic!"
Dr. Sterling, Victoria’s uncle, chimed in weakly. "Victoria is right! That woman performed an illegal surgical procedure without credentials! If Hastings dies, she is guilty of murder!"
Alexander slowly rose to his feet. He took off his ruined cufflinks, tossing them onto a nearby table. Every trace of warmth had vanished from his demeanor, leaving behind the cold, ruthless titan who had conquered Wall Street.
He walked over to Victoria.
"You think she poisoned him?" Alexander asked, his voice deceptively soft.
"Of course she did!" Victoria said, wrapping her hands around his arm, trying to project a facade of fragile vulnerability. "Darling, please. Listen to me. She’s dangerous. She belongs in prison. Let my father’s security handle her—"
Alexander reached down and peeled Victoria’s fingers off his arm as if removing a parasite.
"Arthur Hastings did not drink champagne tonight, Victoria," Alexander stated, his voice ringing through every corner of the room. "Arthur is a diabetic. He only drinks sparkling mineral water from the silver service."
Victoria blinked, her confident smile faltering. "So? She could have poisoned the water!"
"The sparkling water was served by my private butler, Jenkins," Alexander countered, his eyes drilling into her soul. "However... Arthur *did* eat a chocolate truffle from the dessert tray that was brought directly to his table five minutes before he collapsed."
Alexander turned to Briggs. "Bring the dessert tray logs."
Briggs stepped forward with an iPad. "Sir, the chocolate truffles were specially ordered from the Sterling Confectionery line. Delivered by Miss Victoria Sterling’s private chauffeur this afternoon."
Victoria’s face turned from pale to translucent. "That... that proves nothing! That was a gift for the host family!"
"And Arthur was the one who ate it," Alexander whispered dangerously. He looked at Victoria’s trembling left hand, where the ten-carat flawless emerald engagement ring sat—a ring that represented the impending merger between the Vance and Sterling dynasties.
Alexander reached out, took Victoria’s finger, and smoothly slid the ring off.
"Alexander! What are you doing?!" she cried out, her voice cracking.
"The engagement is over," Alexander announced coldly. He tossed the multi-million-dollar ring into a half-empty champagne flute on a passing waiter’s tray. "Leave my house, Victoria. Before I have my forensics team pull the residue from your handbag."
Victoria looked around the room. Her wealthy friends, the politicians she had courted, the socialites who had bowed to her—all of them were looking at her with cold revulsion. With a muffled shriek of humiliation, she gathered her skirt and fled the ballroom into the pouring rain.
Alexander turned back toward the center of the room.
Elena was standing, leaning against a pillar, exhaustion finally overtaking her adrenaline.
"Briggs," Alexander ordered softly. "Lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Especially not Marcus Blackwell."
May you like
He walked toward Elena, swept her into his arms before she could protest, and carried her out of the ballroom, away from the prying eyes of high society.
