Chapter 3 - The Midnight Operation

The Grand Ballroom had transformed from an arena of aristocratic decadence into a nightmare of panic. Wealthy women in designer gowns were pressed against the gilded walls, clutching their pearl necklaces, while men shouted over one another, demanding an ambulance.

In the center of the polished floor, lying flat on his back beneath the crystal chandelier, was Arthur Hastings—seventy-two years old, the founding director of Vance International and the closest thing Alexander had to a surrogate father. Hastings' face was turning a horrifying shade of twilight blue. His lips were purple, his body convulsing in ragged, futile spasms as his lungs failed to draw air.

A physician from the guest list, an elderly cosmetic surgeon named Dr. Sterling—Victoria’s uncle—was kneeling beside him, his hands trembling as he checked Hastings' throat.

"He's choking! An anaphylactic reaction or acute tracheal obstruction!" Dr. Sterling yelled, wiping sweat from his forehead. "His airway is completely shut! Call 911! Does anyone have an EpiPen?!"

"The storm washed out the lower estate bridge!" someone yelled from the crowd. "Paramedics won't be here for at least forty minutes!"

Alexander shoved through the crowd, dropping to his knees beside Hastings. "Arthur! Arthur, stay with me!" Alexander’s composure slipped, his hands grasping his mentor's trembling shoulder. "Sterling, do something!"

"I don't have surgical instruments!" Dr. Sterling stammered, his face grey with terror. "His trachea has collapsed from internal edema! If I cut without proper tools, he’ll bleed to death into his lungs! He won't survive five minutes!"

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the ballroom. Death was entering the room, cold and absolute.

Suddenly, a clear, authoritative voice sliced through the hysteria like a scalpel through skin.

"Move."

Before anyone could react, Elena dropped to her knees beside Hastings.

She had stripped off Alexander’s jacket. Her sleeves were rolled past her elbows, revealing lean, scarred forearms. Her demeanor was completely transformed. There was no hesitation, no submissiveness, no fear. She was an absolute commander walking onto a battlefield.

"Get away from him, you crazy girl!" Victoria shrieked from the front row of onlookers. "She’s a servant! Alexander, pull her off him before she kills him!"

Elena didn't even look up. "He doesn't have an allergy. This is acute laryngeal spasm caused by organophosphate toxicity. He was poisoned."

The room gasped.

"Step aside, doctor," Elena commanded Dr. Sterling with such terrifying, frigid authority that the older man instinctively fell backward onto his heels.

"Elena, what are you doing?" Alexander asked, his voice strained as he watched her hands fly.

"Saving his life. You have three minutes before his brain suffers irreversible ischemic necrosis," she said calmly. She looked up and locked eyes with Alexander. "Do you trust me?"

Alexander looked into her eyes. Beneath the chaos, he saw a woman operating at the peak of absolute genius—a mastery that defied explanation.

"Yes," Alexander said without hesitation. "Briggs! Clear this circle! Nobody touches her!"

"Sterile kit. Now," Elena ordered Briggs, pointing toward the emergency medical box mounted on the ballroom wall. Briggs sprinted and returned within five seconds, slamming the metal box onto the floor.

Elena snapped on latex gloves with a crisp *thwack*. She tore open a sterile scalpel pack, grabbed a hollow silver ballpoint pen from Alexander’s breast pocket, unscrewed the ink cartridge, and sanitized the metal casing with 90% ethanol from a serving cart.

"Hold his head straight, Alexander," Elena said, her voice dropping into the rhythmic cadence of a seasoned trauma surgeon. "Do not let him move."

Alexander placed his massive hands on either side of Arthur Hastings’ temples, his grip iron-clad.

Elena’s fingers palpated the elderly man’s neck, finding the cricothyroid membrane with unerring accuracy. She didn't hesitate. She made a single, clean, horizontal incision across the cartilage.

Blood welled instantly, staining her white apron crimson. Several women in the crowd screamed and turned away. Victoria looked like she was going to faint from sheer disgust.

Elena inserted her curved surgical shears, spreading the tissue, and smoothly slipped the hollow silver pen casing directly into the windpipe.

A violent, guttural hiss of air erupted from the metal tube.

Arthur Hastings’ chest violently expanded. His back arched off the floor as life-saving oxygen rushed into his starved lungs. The cyanotic purple hue across his cheeks began to recede, replaced by a faint, desperate flush of pink.

Elena held the makeshift cannula steady with one hand while using her other hand to apply sterile pressure gauze, checking his pulse at the carotid artery.

"Pulse is returning to normal sinus rhythm. Blood pressure stabilizing," Elena announced, her voice flat, clinical, and completely steady.

She looked up at the stunned crowd.

Every single guest—billionaires, politicians, socialites—was staring at the "maid" covered in blood, holding a human life in her hands with the mastery of a goddess of medicine.

And across the circle, standing behind Victoria, Marcus Blackwell’s face had drained of all color.

"Dr. Bennett..." Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with horror. "It's Dr. Elena Bennett."
